Conversations with Mari Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mari Williams.

Mari, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in New York, but I moved to Augusta shortly before graduating high school. After a brief service in the Army, I took time to figure out what I was really passionate about. I grew up listening to artists like Rusko, Datsik, and Doctor P; and I grew up around a lot of RnB and Jazz, which, naturally, developed into a love for house music. I went to my first Rave in 2019, and ever since then heavy bass music, like Svdden Death, Hol!, Automhate, or Marauda, was a huge influence in my delving into every genre of EDM I could get my hands on. With these genres as a sort of base, I started DJing in 2022, I met the right people, proved what I can do on the decks, and now I play every sort of electronic music gig I can get my hands on, from house nights to raves to boiler rooms and whatever else I’m forgetting right now.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For me, the biggest obstacle was the financial investment needed for this sort of career, luckily I had time, and a wide library, so experiment and figure out what I like, but it took a long time for me to get my own equipment. I’m truly grateful to the people who helped me get where I am now. There was a lot of self doubt at first, but the more I kept at it, the more it kind of just melted away. I wish I had some sort of trick I could use to explain it, but it really was just doing it again and again. for me at least.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a DJ, specializing in electronic music of all kinds, Drum and Bass, House Music, Riddim Bass, Downtempo/UK Bass, Trance; there are a lot lol. Known for always bringing something new, something you haven’t heard, and to try and get you to take at least one song home with you at the end of the night. I really like it when I can feel the energy in a room, when I can see the movement and know that I’ve been able to contribute to something that everyone can enjoy. I try and incorporate my geeky side into my mixes, I enjoy experiencing obscure media, and that goes doubly so for music. Sometimes I’ll hear a tune or melody in some 90’s Japanese OVA or Russian psychedelic animated film and go, “Oh man, that wound go crazy in a mix” lol.

Any big plans?
I’m currently working on making DJing my full time job, and I hope to be DJing stadiums and festivals one day. There’s no rush, I’ve got plenty time, but I’m making steady progress, always trying something new, making myself known.
