Conversations with Marika Col

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marika Col.

Hi Marika, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m originally from Italy and moved to the United States in 2009. When I first arrived, my English skills were very limited, so I started working in a restaurant while adjusting to my new life and learning the language. A little later, I had the opportunity to join a local travel company, and that’s when I was be able to continue the career that I started in Italy in the travel industry.
With courage and determination, I decided to open my own travel agency 8 years ago. It wasn’t always easy, but I believed in myself and in the value, I could bring to my clients. Over the years, through hard work and dedication, I have built lasting relationships and I’m proud to say that I now work with many loyal clients who trust me to design their trips. Being Italian is a real advantage—I have an insider’s knowledge of the country, and since Italy is one of the top destinations in Europe, I can offer my clients unique insights and experiences they won’t find anywhere else.
Traveling has always been my greatest passion, and being able to share that love through my work is a dream come true. I genuinely enjoy every part of the process, listening to clients’ wishes, creating unique itineraries, and making sure everything runs smoothly.
Beyond my career, I also dedicate myself to my family and home. I have a wonderful husband, a beautiful daughter, two cats, and even four chickens who keep life interesting! My days are full, balancing work, family, pets, home, and an active social life. It’s a lot to juggle, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
In the end, I feel very fortunate: I get to care for the people (and animals!) I love while also doing a job that inspires me every single day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Where to start. Moving to a different country was difficult for me. The language barriers, the unfamiliar culture, and the way I had grown up were all challenges. Fortunately, my family and new friends here helped me integrate, and I learned a new lifestyle.

Looking for a job was the hardest experience. Once, I found myself in a room where I was the only person who didn’t understand what was going on. I could recognize most of the words, but the meaning wasn’t clear to me. Someone from outside came into the room and asked me to leave. I said no, but after a few minutes, I left. I drove home crying… it was such a bad experience.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My company is a small boutique tour operator specializing in European destinations. Every year, I travel to Europe to meet with my trusted providers at major tourism fairs, ensuring strong partnerships and reliable service.

My portfolio includes Western Europe but also north Africa, Turkey, UAE, Central and South America. I plan packages that include hotels, transportation, and unique experiences: food and wine tours, biking and hiking, Ferrari drives, private excursions with guides and drivers, or group tours.

I recently added the offer of ocean cruises and curated excursions during European sailings.

My expertise, knowledge, and experience add a plus of what I do. I have been doing this job for several years with passion and dedication and 90% of the feedback from my clients were absolutely positive. That has to count for something! 🙂

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I think that, besides gaining experience, the most difficult part is handling customers. You are planning their vacations, honeymoons, or once-in-a-lifetime trips to Europe, and their expectations are very high. It’s easy to make a mistake—or face something unexpected like a transportation strike or an accident—that could ruin part of the trip. My advice is to always do your job to the best of your ability and, if something happens, handle the situation with professionalism and courtesy.
