Conversations with Mary Imaj

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Imaj.

Hi Mary, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always been into fashion as a teen. My mom specifically was into heels and bags and I think it inspired me without me even knowing. I never knew that I would be this far in such little time. I feel like I have yet to scratch the surface of my potential. I began sketching during the first lockdown because I was so obsessed with puffer bags and was overbuying other people’s work. I just thought that I could do it myself so why not try? Honestly, I had nothing else to do.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have always been my biggest critic. Sometimes I think I’m not doing good enough, but I know I tried. I have so many failed designs or designs that just didn’t work out when I wanted it to. It’s hard, but I would never quit. I have to keep myself going when I feel like I have no spark and that’s honestly the hardest part for me, but I believe in Mary Imaj. I am my own inspiration.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My name is Mary Imaj and I am a 21-year-old designer from Newark, NJ. I am a bag and shoe designer just figuring out my path. I love bags so much and it has always been a part of my life since I came out of the womb literally. My aunt has always gifted me one and if I wore it she always had some money for me lol. I’m most proud of my will to keep pushing. This is a tough world but one thing that I love about myself is that I create for me first and foremost. I love every piece of art that I create. Seeing my work come to life is a dream come true for me. I think what sets me apart is the unknown. I believe that I can design the world and everything in it, lol. Next week I might launch some furniture or a kid’s line. You just never know, and ideas are always flowing. I’m inspired by everything. When I get a spark, I act on it.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In the next 5-10 years, I hope to have my own fashion show and hoepfully a studio for all creatives to enjoy. “Imaj Studios” is my biggest goal. I just hope that my creations feel as special to others as they do to me. I hope to see Rihanna with her own Mary Imaj piece. Mary Imaj is a star, the star. Everything that I make is a timeless piece. My pieces are worthy and a fan favorite. Hopefully in a few years, I will be dipping and dabbing in different industries. I have so many passions.
