Conversations with Mary Shelton

We are thrilled to introduce you to the extraordinary Mary Shelton, a resilient and inspiring individual whose story is both captivating and heartrending. As you read on, Mary will share her remarkable journey in her own words.

Mary, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hello, I’m Mary Shelton, a proud CODA, which stands for Child of Deaf Adults. My parents, who were both born in North Carolina, faced racial prejudice, as my father was white and my mother was black. They attended the Governor Morehead School, where they learned valuable life skills. They waited until their parents passed away to marry and move to Detroit, Michigan, where it was legal. Unfortunately, our family faced tragedy when my firstborn sibling was stolen at birth, and my lastborn sibling was murdered. I’ve written a book titled “Silence Isn’t Golden” that delves into these events and more.

Growing up with deaf parents, my first language was American Sign Language (ASL). After taking early retirement from American Airlines to care for my parents, I became an interpreter. Now, I’m working with Regina Romain to solve the cold cases involving my baby brothers.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
My journey has been anything but smooth. I experienced sexual abuse, robbery, and kidnapping, and I served as an interpreter for my hearing-impaired parents, which left me with little time for a normal childhood.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Despite these challenges, I worked at American Airlines for 15 years, earning numerous awards for perfect attendance and sales goals. This career allowed me to travel the world and provide my parents with experiences they wouldn’t have had otherwise.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
If I had to credit one personal characteristic for my achievements, it would be the discipline that my parents instilled in me. This trait has shaped me into the person I am today and fuels my pursuit of justice for my family.

I hope my story inspires you to persevere in the face of adversity, and to never give up on making a positive impact on the world.
