Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Leigh.
Hi Matt, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From a young age, I was quite ambitious in what I wanted out of life. When I was around ten I had told my grandfather that I wanted to be President one day because that felt like the ultimate accomplishment to my young mind. In fact, for Christmas that year everyone in my family gave me books on politics to show their support of this young dream. But, as quickly as it came into my mind, it left.
This was my story for most of my young life and my early twenties. I would come up with some grandiose business ideas, research the concept or industry to death, and attempt to sway the people in my sphere to get involved. Then, almost like clockwork, would jump to another idea a few months later. It became a running joke in my friend group that every time someone hung out with me I would try and convince them of the “next best idea”.
It was funny to them, but to me, it was a dreaded cycle that I desperately wanted to release from. Then, 2020 happened, and just like the rest of the world, my life came to a screeching halt. I had graduated college at this point and was working one day a week at a coffee shop. I found myself sitting with my thoughts and no projects to work on.
It was in this silence and solitude that I came to the realization that if I try and do everything under the sun, I will actually accomplish nothing. I looked back on my life and realized I was great at starting things, but had no follow-through. I was afraid of failing and whenever I got deep enough into a project to the point where it became real, I would self-sabotage and jump to another project.
I took a long hard look at my life and forced myself to make a decision as to what I wanted. This long process eventually led me to the exhilarating world of Real Estate. Some people in my sphere were involved in the industry in various ways and after watching them I realized, this is not only something I have the skillset for, but is something that would bring me fulfillment.
For me, finishing the course was the hardest part. Remember, I’m really good at starting things. But, once it was finished, something in me shifted. There are many words to describe this moment, but for me, I would call it a breakthrough. As soon as it was completed everything began to fall into place and my fear of failing began to subside.
Today, I consider myself beyond blessed. As a new agent, I would not say that I have a ton of wisdom or expertise to impart to those created to be entrepreneurs from the practical side of things. But what I do have is a story of breakthrough. To anyone stuck in these unhelpful patterns, I would say to get out of your own way. I would urge you to finish something, anything at all.
Realize that you are worthy of succeeding and that your people will have your back if you show the tenacity to follow through. I followed through on my goals and am getting to work with the best Broker I could ask for here at Align Realty Group. I am getting to work alongside my best friend in an industry that is always ebbing and flowing. But most of all I am getting to help people find the homes that best fit their purpose, which makes me feel an emended sense of purpose.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I spoke of before my biggest obstacle was myself. I had to come to the place of realization that I am worthy of succeeding and that only my mindset will make me fail.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I wear a couple of different hats in my career. I work for a property management company in Marietta as a leasing professional. This is a very fulfilling job as I get to serve a specific community on a regular basis. I also work primarily as a Realtor in the Cobb County Area.
While I work with people from all life stages, I find myself working a lot with first-time homebuyers. Buying a home is the biggest purchase most people will ever make and there can be a lot of stress involved. There is something so exciting about walking people through this process for the first time and making it fun and exciting.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
This is difficult because I feel like I am a fairly open book. But, some people may not know that I love to write and hope to publish a book one day.
