Conversations with Matthew Han

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Han.

Hi Matthew, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hi, my name is Matthew Han and I’m a photographer & videographer based in NYC. I started visualizing my passion with my camera when I went back to my country due to the pandemic. There was a 16-week filmmaking bootcamp program in Korea, so I learned all the fundamentals and basics over there. From September 2022, after shooting NYFW runway show, I wanted to become a portrait photographer especially in the fashion field. Yet there’s still far way to go for me, I won’t stop visualizing my passion until I achieve my dream to become a Fashion photographer.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Challenge would never be smooth because it wouldn’t be a challenge if it was smooth. Like other artists, I was struggling financially after quitting my job from martial arts school. But after reaching out to various of people, I started to find a way to overcome tough situations that I was going through. I’ve been always stressed to decide whether to become a commercial photo & videographer or to become an artist. Recently, I realized that I could do both by balancing / managing time of things that I have to do and things I want to do.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I create videography and shoot photos. Recently I started to direct cinematic / fashion portraits to specialize myself from other photographers. I am not only dreaming of becoming a great photographer but also creative director. So I started to create artistic video in my photography projects. I am proud of myself for being in my current position in a year of creating videos and photos. Yet still there’s tons of mountains to conquer and I will be there someday.

How do you think about happiness?
Any small stuff around my life makes me happy after going through surgery early this year such as the fact that I can live without stomach pain. I realized that I can be grateful and happy just by things that I encounter every day. Simple things like nice weather, cute dogs on the street, people around me. Besides that, creating arts (photos, videos, music) makes me happy once it is finished. When new inspiration and ideas come up in my head, I also get excited and happy.
