Conversations with Mattie B

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mattie B.

Mattie B

Hi Mattie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Mattie B. Winston Salem, NC native born and raised. I come from a large, close-knit family and a loving environment. I came up heavy into athletics. My first love was basketball and later came track and field. A competitor. Another big interest for me as a kid was reading. I like to think that reading and my addiction to music videos are the the reasons why I grew to be able to write songs at such a high level today.

I like to say I’ve lived many lifetimes and I truly have had a lot of amazing pockets of life. From experiencing great family moments and building strong friendships to setting state records and competing in sports at a high level. I’ve coached at my high school on the court and field. I’ve run an in-home daycare, and have worked in middle school classrooms. Even with losses, trials, and hardships, I am having an amazing journey.

In music, I’ve been in many amazing studios with exceptional talent and have connected with some of my favorite writers, artists, and producers. I’ve had the honor to collaborate with Grammy Award-winning producer Cory Mo, legendary rapper Bun B, rising producer Twan Da God of 6lement, rap legend Devin The Dude, and more. These are some things that have carried me through so far to this moment.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road but everything comes in cycles. There have been some challenges on my path for sure. First and foremost, getting to know me and accept me. It’s pretty tough to do life and not be intentional about getting to know yourself. Luckily this journey started early for me.

There are always moments of evolution and change, but I am confident in who I am and the paths I’ve chosen. Doubt does its best to slip in but a gift I choose to honor and work hard to keep strong is my ability to find the light in darkness, and my ability to find the positive in challenging moments and situations.

Another big challenge has been choosing the entrepreneurial route. It has its pros and cons, and ups and downs but I’m still working to find my footing. In it all, my blessings easily outweigh everything else and I am thankful.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Absolutely! I am Mattie B, a songwriter and singer. With an emphasis on songwriting! I write in different genres from rnb, gospel, rap, and pop, to country. I love to imagine and I am dope at creating stories to different vibrations. Most of the songs I write are demos, and demonstrations, created for other voices and artists.

I release music of my own, and I have also been blessed to get into a consistent rhythm writing to briefs for sync licensing opportunities with one of my producers London Elixir. Writing for TV and film allows me to be an artist within different genres without being bound to expectations.

My latest single, “Big Energy”, was written for TV and is now out and set to be on season 2 episode 1 of the television show “Reasonable Doubt”. I’m most proud of my support system. I am super thankful for my gift and abilities, but being in a position where I can share this space with my family and friends is most special!

What sets me apart from others is my ability to connect with different perspectives and put them into songwriting and recording. There is only one Mattie B. Shout out to my mom Carol, my sisters Crystal and Tameka, and brother Jeremy, the Mattie Mondays crew, Ashleè Samuels, Musician Tailors Chevy and Twin, and everyone else who has played roles in my life and journey. You know who you are!

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Perseverance is the most important quality to my success. I will never quit and I can’t even imagine my life without songwriting and creating music.
