Conversations with McKee Taylor

Today we’d like to introduce you to McKee Taylor. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Dreamland Entertainment started in Seattle Washington with an iPhone, a few wigs and an idea. It was the lovechild of three people who shared nothing in common except a desire to tell truly impactful relatable stories.

CEO and Director McKee Taylor has always had a passion for the diverse ways in which film can be used for storytelling. From a young age, Mckee gravitated towards film for its ability to draw out powerful emotional responses and induce empathy for characters who are not classically relatable. Growing up middle class in the 90’s and coming to age in the early 20’s in Albany, New York as a Black Lesbian, Mckee has always been intensely aware of the difference in the way certain stories are told and the substantial impact of meaningful representation can have.

Creative Director Jona Revell’s passion for film and production comes from both her training in Aesthetics as a classical artist and world history. Film is a uniquely emotional art form that pulls from every aspect of classical and modern art to create a rare form of shared intimacy that defies both time and space. As a first-generation U.S citizen born in Tempe, AZ to mixed-race parents, Jona has always been aware of the importance of sharing stories and discovering differences in order to develop a sense of shared empathy in a mixed culture family.

Inspired by the 2020 limited series Hollywood, together we created Dreamland Entertainment with an idea to bring stories to life. Our specialty is storytelling but will do the occasional reality tv and/or music visual when the importance of the story needs to be told. Our goal is to show POC in all different aspects of life because that’s exactly how we live, not just the ones given to us by the media. Although everyone’s story is important and many different cultures intwine with one another, I feel it’s my duty as a Black American Women to shine light on the power and beauty we behold as African Americans. Through dedication and skill we were able to work with many creative people within Atlanta, bringing their dreams and visions to life.

Dreamlands Ent. most recent project is a LGBT+ dating show called Girls Need Love Co-Created with Brittany Hodge. This show is something truly our community needed and deserved. There’s not many shows displaying a romantic connection between people of the LGBT+ community. Our job is to make sure those stories are being told in a tasteful and exciting manner. You can find Girls Need Love Season 1 on YouTube! Welcome To Dreamland!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Although it’s been an extremely fun ride, It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road at all. It’s hard work putting together a team when everyone has their own dreams, distractions and aspirations. A five person team can easily change into a two person team overnight when objectives aren’t aligned. That’s the hardest thing we’ve encountered, but in the end Jona and I know the goal and absolutely see the vision even if someone else doesn’t see, we will always continue our lives work with pride, consistency and persistence.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We specialize in storytelling in the form of film(movie) production so this means anything from a short film to a full-length feature film. We are known for our short films like our horror short CAGED, our comedy short QUARANTINE HEIST, and our reality dating show GIRLS NEED LOVE. We are most proud of the fact we created our own path in the industry, we didn’t come to Atlanta copying what everyone else was doing. We created our own lane. The movies we create are different than the average LGBT production company. As much as I realize we ( POC LGBT+) stories need to be told, I believe there’s so much more diversity to be told within that community that creates the entire community.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
