Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Manigault.
Hi Melissa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been around cameras for as long as I can remember. One of my favorite uncles was a photographer on the side, and some of my fondest memories are sitting beside him for hours in his darkroom, watching images slowly appear in trays of developer. It felt like magic — witnessing someone’s most meaningful moments come to life right before my eyes. I didn’t know it then, but something was being planted in me.
In my early twenties, I became the unofficial vacation photographer, armed with nothing more than a disposable 27-exposure cardboard camera. Every click mattered. There were no retakes, no previews — just intention and anticipation. When I eventually upgraded to a digital camera, a whole new world opened up. Suddenly, creativity had fewer limits, and I was hooked.
About 15 years ago, a dear friend nudged me to stop treating photography like a hobby and start seeing it as something bigger. He convinced me to invest in my first “real” camera — a Canon T3 — and that decision changed everything.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Most of my challenges have come from within. I still work a full-time job, so balancing responsibility with pursuing my passion has required intention, discipline, and sacrifice. It also takes courage to put yourself out there — to create, to be seen, and to believe your work matters.
Five years ago, I experienced a life-changing loss when my husband passed away after an illness. In that season, photography took a pause as I focused on caring for our little one and navigating a new normal. It was a time of survival, healing, and quiet strength.
Two years ago, I felt something gently calling me back. Picking up my camera again wasn’t just about business — it was about reclaiming joy. Photography became a way to rediscover myself, to create beauty again, and to honor how fleeting and precious our moments truly are.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I photograph people — all kinds of people! Kids with big personalities, grown-ups who swear they’re “awkward in photos,” families who haven’t had everyone in the same frame in years… I love it all.
What I really specialize in is capturing natural moments — the real smiles, the side glances, the belly laughs, the hugs that happen in between poses. I’ll guide you when you need it, but I’m always looking for those genuine connections that make a photo feel alive instead of staged.
I also love photographing parties and special events. I’m the person quietly floating around making sure I capture the big moments and the little ones — the reactions, the details, the unexpected laughs. My goal is for someone who couldn’t make it to the event to scroll through the gallery and say, “Wow… I feel like I was there.”
What sets me apart? Definitely my personality. I make sessions fun and relaxed — no stiff posing or forced smiles. I’ll probably hype you up a little, make you laugh, and help you forget you’re even being photographed. Most of my clients say they came in nervous and left saying, “That was actually fun!”
And honestly, what I’m most proud of is the trust people give me. Whether it’s a milestone, a celebration, or just “we haven’t taken photos in years,” being invited into those moments is something I never take lightly.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
One book that’s had a strong impact on me — both personally and professionally — is The Four Agreements. It gives me a simple framework for how I show up in life and in business.
Be impeccable with your word: I’m on time, prepared, and committed to delivering exactly what I promise.
Don’t make assumptions: I communicate clearly and ask questions so my clients feel heard and understood.
Don’t take anything personally: I lead with grace and positivity, knowing everyone may be carrying something unseen.
Always do your best: I may not be perfect, but I always show up with intention, professionalism, and my best energy.
It keeps me grounded and aligned in everything I do.
