Conversations with Miyani Sales

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miyani Sales

Hi Miyani, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When you’re young, people always tell you to “dream big” or “reach for the stars” but as you grow up the world tells you to “stick to one thing” or “go where the money is”; As an adult I’ve learned that both statements can be true. Since a young age I’ve always been a hustler, whether that was sewing clothes, doing graphic design or coaching tennis, I’ve always had some form of a hobby, yet somehow they’ve always been interlinked. I grew up in Atlanta with 9 sisters and 2 brothers and my mom always taught us that the best job is the one that you own, and while I didn’t understand how big of a deal that was when I was younger, it’s a huge foundation of who I am now. When I was 8 I wanted to own a planning business, be a model, and design clothes but once I turned 12 I began doing graphic design for my church, I fell in love with it. From about the age of 12 until I was 14 I taught myself how to use Adobe Photoshop, PicsArt, and then Canva in 2020. While I’ve always loved graphic design I never knew exactly how I wanted to use it, or what I wanted to do with it; but once I got to college I decided to start my graphic design business called LifebyMiyani. After starting LifebyMiyani I decided I wanted to expand and since I’ve always been passionate about fashion design I started Leftthe99. Leftthe99 is a clothing brand for Christians who’ve had to leave the 99 to pursue the one who left the 99 for them. I plan to expand leftthe99 into way more than a clothing brand but for now I’m truly grateful to even be able to say I own a clothing brand because just a year ago it was just a drawing on a piece of paper.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it has not been a smooth road at all. A huge struggle I’ve always dealt with is my mental health and with being in college all of those issues definitely became a lot heavier. With juggling two jobs, school and a business all at once I’ve had to teach myself how to multitask on an extreme level, all while taking care of my mental health. Something that’s definitely kept me stable is my relationship with God, the support of my friends/family and therapy. I also struggled with being disciplined, I’ve always dreamed of being an entrepreneur but never had the discipline to make those dreams a reality, but one day I just decided that no one can make those dreams come true except for me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My greatest accomplishment is my clothing brand because I built it from the ground up. Before starting it earlier this year I knew nothing about owning a clothing brand except for how to build a website so I taught myself everything. Something that sets me apart from is the fact that I can adapt to anything, both professionally and personally as it’s an essential part of your journey as a business owner. Another thing that sets me apart is my relationship with God; I truly feel it my heart that anything God has built no one can tear down. When it comes to my brand Leftthe99 what sets it apart is that it caters to all age groups, whether you’re a college student, adult, or teen, everyone has a different journey with God and should be able to express it through their clothes. I also would love to one day be a social media influencer as well and inspire others through my journey, whether that’s through motivational speaking or maybe preaching.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing I was always very passionate about anything and everything, whether I was working with children or talking about my dreams for the future, I’ve always been a passionate person. I was always interested in fashion, graphic design, marketing and being an influencer but I never knew how I wanted to merge all of them. I was also very explorative growing up and even now very open to trying new things. A lot of my personality and interests from when I was younger is exactly the same, I’ve just learned how to build a career with it.
