Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Fenton
Hi Nick, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As a teenager I became very interested in music, specifically playing drums for various bands I formed with friends. At that time cell phone cameras were not what they are today so I would use a point-and-shoot camera to take photos and videos of us playing our instruments. In college I started to travel more and would bring my Canon T3i with me everywhere. In 2015 I visited Iceland and the landscape inspired me to learn more about the fundamentals of composition, lighting, and overall improve my photography skills.
Fast-forward to 2021. My sister-in-law, Niamh, and her husband, Ethan, asked if I wanted to join them to photograph their friend’s wedding in Florida. I had only been a guest at a handful of weddings before so this was a great opportunity to get an understanding of how a full wedding day flows. From there I started to offer free local sessions to families and couples. I felt comfortable using a camera but I needed more experience working with clients before jumping into doing more weddings.
At this point I decided to upgrade my DSLR to a mirrorless Canon R6 which was a major game changer in the way I approached photography. I started to shadow other photographers and worked my way up to building a portfolio. This experience led to more opportunities for being a second-shooter and ultimately booking weddings on my own.
In April of 2022 I officially formed my business, Fenton Photo LLC. Since then I have documented over 60 weddings and have also added videography to my creative skillset.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve definitely had my share of ups and downs! I’ve had great experiences networking with other vendors in the industry and I’ve gained many new friends through my creative journey. However, maintaining a business in addition to working full time can be difficult. My biggest challenges have been marketing and also pre-wedding anxiety. I’m a bit of a nervous wreck before I go to a shoot but once I get started I’m in my zone 100%.
I’m thankful for my wife, Sarah, who has supported me through everything!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a wedding photographer and videographer specializing in a classic style with traditional and candid elements. I’m known for my attention to detail and vibrant editing style. I’m most proud of pushing myself to improve my creative and people skills so I can provide a level of service that I feel makes couples feel comfortable on the happiest day of their lives!
I think my technical background sets me apart from others in the wedding industry. I have a Bachelors degree in Applied Computer Science from Kennesaw State and over a decade of experience as an IT/Cybersecurity engineer. I feel like most of the time my brain revolves around processes and workflows so I incorporate those concepts into my business where I can.
I also don’t post a lot on social media or like to spend a lot of time on it. I’ll share some previews and completed projects but not much else.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
