Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina Mallery.
Hi Nina, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Originally I studied art history and was fond of the thought and process behind art. I didnt consider that art could be my career and For years I was creating art for myself as a hobby. When the pandemic hit back in 2020 I decided to go back to school and study animation. I found in studying that I was drawn to the worlds and places behind the action and so I became a background artist and illustrator. I love being able to explore the world and have lived all across the world so it felt natural to start creating background paintings.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not, I think there have been a lot of detours and adventures along the way but I see them as beneficial to my art. Ive had quite a few careers before settling into painting, having worked at a museum, in customer service, in admin jobs and tech startups, a brewery even. Each unique adventure has given me alot of life experience to reference in my art and I think all the better for it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a professional fine artist, painting landscapes and cityscapes as well as working as a background painter for tv animation.
Im really proud that this last year 2025 when animation work got slow I expanded my traditional fine art practice and have been showing in galleries and art fairs. It was a big win this year getting to show at The Other Art Fair in London, and also being able to sell more of my personal work.
I think what sets me apart is probably that im adaptable. Im always interested in learning new things and im never afraid of trying something new and seeing how it can inform my art practice.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think keeping a level of positivity around adapting. Having the ability to trust that even when there are bumps in the roads or I hit a roadblock that there will be something better coming. Being an artist is very much a grind and most of the work is keeping your mindset positive when there are lots of ups and downs.
