Today we’d like to introduce you to Obio Jones.
Hi Obio, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
To make a long story short, I decided that my truth deserved a voice in 2019 and in 2021 I decided that my truth needed a platform. There are many people who are trying to navigate their sexuality much like I was and my aim is to give people access to language that supports who they are. What Pride does every year is amazing and I want the voices of the LGBTQ community to continue to be amplified and valued year-round.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ha! This has to be a trick question. I will say that it has been a rewarding road. Sadly everyone doesn’t understand that people are different and that people reserve the right to decide for themselves what their uniqueness looks like. There’s been a decent amount of hateful comments, but knowing that I’m helping people feel more comfortable in their skin is worth the foolishness.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an LGBTQ advocate who identifies as gay and he/him. I create content that centers the LGBTQ experience across all social platforms. I’m currently on season 2 of my YouTube series “It’s Just Not Adding Up.” I’m most proud of the one-on-one conversations I’ve had with the people in my community. I could’ve benefitted from having someone to bounce ideas or questions off of when I was navigating the space so being that person to others is heartwarming. I think my take on showing people their biases and really diving into all the things that affect my community makes me unique. Ultimately, I’m myself and no one can replicate what’s yours, you know.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
It’s an interesting question because everyone who watched anything I’ve put out or purchased any apparel is supporting me, but also supporting themselves at the same time. They motivate me to continue and it reminds me that what I’m doing is purposeful work. The credit always goes to my community.
