Today we’d like to introduce you to Phil Stevens.
Phil, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was in Information Technology for almost 20 years when I got called into the creative film world while at my church. I joined the actor’s team then got involved with film production well. After spending some time in film and much prayer, I made the intentional choice to pursue a film career instead of I.T. It was scary, but the call to my NEXT was clear as mud. I did social media, software development, photos and video for a friend’s 3rd party product testing company which resulted in me landing my first large client, The Home Depot. Years later I took a job as the Creative Director at a giga-church, Victory Church where we make incredible feature films, shorts, series bumpers and documentaries.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been easy. For about a year, when I was waiting for a large client to put the next series of videos on my plate, I had zero other clients. All my eggs were in one basket. That is NOT good business. There was a season of trusting God to provide but that also fueled me to start shaking the trees to muster up more clients. I rebranded us from Phil Stevens Film to Bed Head Media. It totally changed the game for us.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I would say I specialize in directing and producing film. I’ve been told my superpower is mustering up the best talent in Atlanta for a project and leading those people with grace, efficiency and excellence. I’m most proud of the slavery short film I did years ago. Then later winning Best Short Film Director from International Christian Film Festival for a women’s conference short film on grief we produced. But I am most proud of the people I am given the honor of mentoring and working with. Some of them are soaring like eagles. I could win all the Oscars in the world, but the most fulfilling thing to me is to invest in someone that invests in someone else. Paying it forward is gold. That to me is true legacy, not the awards I’ve won, but who I’ve intentionally stopped to have those much needed, “I see in you…” conversations with.
What’s next?
My plans for the future are unknown at the moment. I’m in a tough season where I am desperately trying to find enough silence in all of the noise to listen for my NEXT. I’m honestly going into the 3rd quarter of my life next year and the second decade of this career. I want to make sure I am stepping into and focused on true mastery of my craft. I have plans to hyper focus on that ‘one thing’ very soon. Aside from that, I’ve opened up a new film studio and purchased the next level, high-end film camera to accompany my skillset. It’s pretty exciting, it’s the same camera Roger Deacons filmed 1917 on and recently Dune.
