Conversations with Philip Telfer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Philip Telfer.

Hi Philip, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always had a passion for cooking since the age 5, I have been in the kitchen with my amazing mother Gloria Range & my beautiful grandmother Margaret Range; from there the dream began. I am originally from West Palm Beach, FL which in you from south Florida you understand it is a melting pod of cultures packed in just a small radius in Florida. I moved to Atlanta, GA about 10 years ago and although I worked a lot of 9 to 5 jobs; cooking, gaming, and simply entertaining has always been my passion. I started catering small events and showcasing my gaming skills and more through social media (IG: 561Smooth). I am starting small but I have big dreams of bridging the gap between our elders and the youth through gaming, music, and cooking.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road to understand that the financial toll operating a small business can take on you mentally and physically. Life happens from Covid, political unrest, and the lost of key members within your family makes you see life from a different lens. Being able to fight through your fear of trying is key, but this is not always easy no matter if the whole world believes in you one must believe in themselves. As time went on I made myself get out of my comfort zone and adapt to a new day in age but also trying new things which here I am.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a chef (Smooth Soulful Plates) which I specialize in soul food inspired dishes such as BBQ, Red Beans & Rice, Blackened Salmon, amongst other dishes. I am a live game streamer on Twitch under the alias: PalmBeachSmooth. This has been truly a joy because I love gaming and to be able to interact with others while still showcasing my skills is amazing. I also love the arts so I make hip hop music, I have been in extra roles on television series (which I love acting and entertaining) the big break has not come yet to showcase these skills but I never stop trying. What sets me apart from other is I’m simply Smooth or Palm Beach Smooth to be exact. I don’t try to compete with others success but congratulate and continue to pursue my own. I want to unite more than be destructive to my black and brown community.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In terms of entrepreneurship within the restaurant industry I believe will continue to grow, so many people are taking the chance to pursue their culinary dreams and Im here for it. Gaming will continue to grow especially with some major games on the horizon within these next couple of years. The entertainment business has changed it has become an odd seesaw of ultra PG material or over the top visions, but a lot of young producers and actors are emerging from all parts of life not just acting schools.
