Conversations with Qu West

Today we’d like to introduce you to Qu West.

Hi Qu, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I formed the group Xplicit in 1995. We released one of the hottest singles from ATL called, “Voyage To Atlanta in 1996. I founded Qu West Photography in 2006, initially taking on small projects and learning through experience, trial, and persistence. Over time, my work expanded beyond photography into video, event coverage, sports, and community-focused storytelling. What began as a creative outlet evolved into a professional platform that allowed me to support businesses, organizations, families, and athletes by helping them present themselves authentically and professionally.

Along the way, I faced many of the challenges common to entrepreneurship—limited resources, balancing multiple roles, navigating setbacks, and learning how to sustain a business long-term. Those experiences taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of relationships. Rather than viewing obstacles as barriers, I learned to treat them as lessons that refined my vision and strengthened my purpose.

As my career developed, my focus expanded beyond business into community impact. Through nonprofit work and local initiatives, I’ve been intentional about giving back, supporting youth, honoring legacy, and creating opportunities for others—especially in neighborhoods and communities that are often overlooked. Much of what I do today is rooted in service, mentorship, and preserving stories that might otherwise be lost.

Today, I see my work as a blend of creativity, entrepreneurship, and community leadership. I’m still learning, still evolving, and still motivated by the same goal I started with—to create meaningful work that reflects real people, real experiences, and real impact.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Through Qu West Photography, I provide professional photography and video services for individuals, businesses, sports organizations, and community events. I specialize in capturing authentic moments—whether that’s branding content for a business, live sports action, milestone family moments, or coverage of community initiatives.

I’m known for being versatile and dependable. Over the years, I’ve worked across many environments—from fast-paced sports fields to intimate events and large community gatherings—and I’ve built a reputation for delivering high-quality work under real-world conditions. I understand how to tell a story visually while also meeting practical needs like branding, promotion, and documentation.

What I’m most proud of is the trust people place in me to capture moments that matter. Many of my projects aren’t just about aesthetics; they’re about legacy, visibility, and representation. Whether I’m documenting an event, creating media for a small business, or supporting a community initiative, I take that responsibility seriously. Knowing that my work helps people preserve memories, grow their platforms, or feel seen is incredibly meaningful to me.

What sets me apart is my connection to the community and my long-term perspective. I don’t approach projects as one-off transactions—I build relationships. Having lived and worked in Atlanta for most of my life, I understand the culture, the people, and the stories that shape this city. That allows me to create work that feels genuine rather than staged, and intentional rather than generic.

At the core, I’m driven by purpose as much as creativity. I see my work not just as a service, but as a tool to uplift stories, support growth, and create lasting impact.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Personality wise, I was always popular always popular- The king of the class and very caring of friends and family. Growing up, I was interested in baseball, being a dish, jockey, music production, videography and photography.
