Conversations with Queen Rogers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Queen Rogers.

Queen Rogers

Hi Queen, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Queen’s GEMS Club, Inc. is a nonprofit youth organization that provides social engagement opportunities and educational support for at-risk girls aged 10-16. G.E.M.S. stands for Girls, Empowered Motivation for Success. All active club members are provided with the opportunity to learn, discover, and develop their interests and knowledge to become successful individuals in an equitable society, regardless of their socioeconomic status or cultural background. When I was in high school, my academic counselor told me that my grades were so low that I “can’t” attend the medical program or college. Her telling me that “I Can’t” …became my motivation to prove her wrong and prove to myself that I CAN. Not only did I graduate from college, I adopted the phrase and made it my personal motto: “Can’t” is a curse word… I can do anything if I try.” Many girls in the Queen’s GEMS Club program often hear curse words like “can’t” and “never” every day in school and/ or at home. Being in a positive and supportive environment while overcoming challenges motivates me to continue to do what I do successfully. Our Mission Statement is “We strive to create a safe, respectful environment where girls are encouraged to learn and share openly to make a difference to become successful.”

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a small/ local nonprofit organization, we often face financial struggles along the way. Based on our GoFundMe campaign, the organization needs support for:
• Volunteer incentives
• Educational materials
• Transportation
• Food/ snacks for meetings
• Club Uniforms
• Team-building events and field trips

How do you define success?
Success is more than just achieving your goals. It is the continuous pursuit of determination by waking up every day, thanking God for life, and not giving up when you’re knocked down. Knowing my words have power… I speak about “positive life” to be successful every day.
