Today we’d like to introduce you to Reuben Davis
Hi Reuben, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My brother and I started Go Yard! Outdoor Maintenance in 2017 as high schoolers cutting grass for extra money, and over the years we’ve expanded into a full fledge yard and landscape service, formally branding to Go Yard! O.M. in September 2023. We started with a small mower, an electric leaf blower and our fathers 1968 pickup truck and now possess $12k worth of equipment and two trucks. Our business is still growing (as are we) but we’ve become very well represented in our southeast Atlanta community. We are looking to further expand and grab more market share, but we encourage competition as this industry seems to always be booming in Georgia.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Overall the road has been mostly smooth, although we’ve hit a few big potholes along the way. As a teenager its challenging to save your money, especially with rising costs all across the nation. One peice of equipment can cost as much as 5 or 6 thousand dollars, so it took time to amass our fleet. In the winter time, our business slows down due to lack of growth, and we try to branch out into other services (pressure washing, leaves, outdoor constructions, etc) Also, some times clients won’t take a young man seriously because they don’t think I’m experienced enough to do good work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We specialize in routine lawn maintenance and custom landscape builds. I am most proud of the fact that our clients trust us for recommendations and give us a high degree of autonomy. This means that our customers feel as if their property is good hands. We are different from other landscape companies in that we are very flexible in the services we provide and not bound by only a certain set of services. Our inboxes are open to any kind of outdoor project one might pitch us!
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’ve taken a number of risks during my business venture. The first I took was quitting my job to do this full time. The second and probably the most daunting was investing lots of money into specialized equipment not knowing if I was gonna have enough work to even be able to make expenses back. Job security was a major concern of mine, but I’ve managed to stay busy and continue to grow by networking, using social media and meeting as many homeowners as I could.
