Today we’d like to introduce you to Ricky Wing.
Hi Ricky, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Well, I originally grew up in Baltimore, Maryland amongst four of my younger sisters. And I was always fascinated when they would go and get their hair done and I always was mesmerized by the movement of hair on tv .so around 13 or 14, I started experimenting on my sister’s hair and I think that’s when it clicked that I loved doing hair and not just doing hair but creating. So fast forward to 2015 when I moved from Baltimore to Ohio with my mom and sisters and brother and I was in my junior year of high school that’s when I would do my sister’s hair and people would notice so I was doing hair sometimes after school for other students ( seniors ) and then once I graduated that’s when I started working at little ceasers pizza all while still taking clients. And I was doing that for a while before I finally quit in 2018 and took on hair full time fast forward to me doing hair in my mom’s basement and having all the girls coming out, lol. And then I stayed in Ohio for four years and then packed all my things in my car and moved to Atlanta Georgia. And now I’m doing celebs like Summer Walker, Savanna James, Cardi B, etc.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I would like to say it has but it hasn’t, lol because after I graduated from high school, I went to a cosmetology school that I thought was just the best school ever to go to. Turned out to be absolutely horrible and I actually left after 800 hours because I felt I wasn’t getting the best experience so for a couple of months after I left. I stayed home practicing for my state boards until I eventually went to Paul Mitchell hair school and graduated and got my license.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a hairstylist and I specialize in wigs and anything lace and a plethora of other things. I think what sets me apart is my eye for detail and the neatness of my work. What I am most proud of so far in my career is a summer walker concert I did lol it was my first concert and what I will be most proud of is soon to come.
What makes you happy?
What makes me happy is being able to do what I love and being able to spread my gift to people that sometimes need that extra boost of confidence and not only that but being able to bring joy to people and inspiration to people coming up after me and being a role model for my siblings.
