Today we’d like to introduce you to Rogelio Peral.
Hi rogelio, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Honestly, my story starts when I was a kid. I was practically born in a circus. I come from a full circus family, and my grandfather, ‘Pepino” was one of the great Cuban clowns. So making people laugh is basically in my DNA.
At age 12, I had an accident that almost cost me my life, a detachment of the first and second cervical vertebrae and I spent over three years recovering. In 2004 I immigrated to the United States, and soon after formed an urban music group. That became my school: I learned music production working with amazing Cuban artists and producers.
Around 2015 I went to film school, graduated as a cinematographer, and even won Best Director for my short film ‘Ya Vienen Llegando.’
Then COVID hit… and I started making social-media content just for fun. But I fell in love with the process, the comedy, the audience connection and decided to turn it into my full-time path. And here we are.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To be honest, it wasn’t easy at all. My path has been filled with obstacles — from not having enough to eat to literally sleeping on the streets. I remember studying cinematography in university while my finances collapsed. I had to choose between paying rent or continuing my education. I kept studying, and thanks to having a car, I spent several nights sleeping in it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m passionate about comedy, and I specialize in musical parodies. In each one, I try to deliver a powerful message through humor. I come from a country where the government neglects its people, children digging through trash for food, hospitals in deplorable conditions, no medicine, no basic resources, and a dictatorship that punishes anyone who speaks up for their rights.
Through my parodies, I use humor as a way to bring global attention to what’s happening in my beloved Cuba. It’s my way of turning comedy into truth, and art into a voice for those who don’t have one.
