Today we’d like to introduce you to Roger Fountain.
Hi Roger, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been in the arts since I was a child. I loved to draw and tell stories, and both of those loves brought me to photography and music. They’re all connected, and the line that connects them is storytelling.
I initially wanted to pursue advertising as a career because I loved the idea of telling a story in 30 seconds or less and photography takes that idea and pushes it to the extreme—capturing and telling a story in a frozen moment. A friend of mine says photography is like music because it encompasses the nectar of life at its fullest—drama, pain, humor, beauty, and joy.
That sort of thinking has always been the spine of my work. I’m not really into lighting and setups. I usually don’t ask people to pose, what I like is to catch those moments and allow those moments happen in real time.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I hate to be put into a box. Once people put you into a category, the sense of what art is dies.
I believe that the pursuit of art is never smooth. It’s the rocky spots. along the way that help to grow and created our best work. I’m constantly struggling to learn and do uncomfortable things in order. to achieve something I’ve not done before.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In the last three decades of my working life, I’ve been known as a creative director at Warner Bros., where I developed the in-house music department. I’ve won an award at Cannes Corporate Media & TV Award for a short documentary series titled “Nature Forecast.”
I’ve sold my photography to private collectors. I’ve had a coffee table book published, titled “Angel Eyes: Ethiopia through the lens of a Black American man.”
I’m currently working on a novel about a fictitious town where a Black man is murdered by the police. The story is told through the man’s eyes after his death.
I’ve exhibited at Empire Arts Gallery in Kirkwood. My work is now available at Sustainable. Home Goods in Serenbe. And I’m developing more work for another book and hopefully more exhibitions in Atlanta and nationally.
I’m most proud my ability to continue to reinvent myself.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My family and my wife make me the most happy because they bring me inspiration and foundation.
