Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruby Reign.
Hi Ruby, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started off as a college student in Indianapolis, I didn’t know which major to pursue let alone the career path. All I knew was that I wanted to make a decent living and be “successful” in the eyes of my family. However, all of that changed following my move to Atlanta. When I came here for the first time, it was what I would call a creative’s heaven. Rather than solely corporate jobs, artists are everywhere, free to make a killing doing whatever complements their expertise. To say in the least, I was inspired. After watching my mentor build his clothing brand from the ground up and having several conversations with my mentor, we devised a business plan for Ruby’s Premium Collection. During my childhood, I remember always getting in trouble for hair whether it was cutting off all my doll’s hair, redoing the girl’s hair at school, sneaking out to do hair and more. Moving to Atlanta gave me freedom a newfound sense of freedom to be a creative. Today not only am I a college graduate, but I am a licensed cosmetologist perfecting her craft while on the brink of establishing the start of her legacy with the release of Ruby’s Premium Collection.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, but nothing worth having comes easily and every great story starts with a testimony. The first year into planning, I remember a week where I spent all I had on inventory right before the transmission blew in my car at the time. Two days later, I got fired from my job. This is an example of one of the numerous situations where I felt at my lowest. My personal life collided with my business; realistically I didn’t have the funds to move at the pace in which I wanted. The bitter taste of doubt, fear, and frustration was strong but, during my downtime I learned a lot of lessons that made me grateful for the timing of everything. I can honestly say all of my losses built character.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a master cosmetologist with a degree in communication specializing in hair and makeup while preparing the upcoming launch of my business. As an artist, being multidimensional is one of the many qualities that set me apart from the rest. Going into cosmetology school, I made it my priority to learn as much as I could in every area. However, what a lot of people don’t tell you is that cosmetology school teaches you solely to pass the state board. Any further knowledge is independently learned. This can be extremely discouraging to many during the process of obtaining licensing, but despite the difficulty, I remained resilient. Out of my class of 23, I was one of the five students to graduate high school as a licensed cosmetologist. Beyond schooling, I continued my practice towards perfecting my craft in every area and I have to say that I am the most proud of my growth over the years. Although I have come a long way, I have further to go but overall, I’m enjoying my journey.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I have to say my greatest lesson is dedication, you only get out what you put in consistently. You have to wake up every day with your “why” in mind and actively work to fulfill it. Do it when you’re tired, do it in the face of rejection, do it when you’re scared of the outcome… if you were to hear a flat out no today, wouldn’t it be the same result as not trying at all? But, what if what you thought to be a closed door just needed a harder push? Would you rather do something you hate or fail doing something you love? Will power determines success, the goal is to keep pushing despite all adversity to fulfill what’s necessary for your “why.”
