Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan and Keya Richmond.
Ryan went to Illinois to visit for a funeral in January of 2022. He went to a family friend’s popcorn shop and had to remain there for a while because of the weather. During the visit, he tasted the popcorn and began to talk to his friend, Uncle Greg, as he is affectionately known. Uncle Greg shared his journey to gourmet popcorn ownership, and Ryan became inspired. Once he returned home from the trip, she asked me to try the popcorn. I enjoyed many of the flavors; then, Ryan asked me about opening our own here in Georgia. If you know my husband, then you know he has a business mind. He has co-owned and operated Xtreme Paintball Conyers for the past eight years. Whatever he puts his mind to flourishes because he is going to do his research and due diligence to make it happen. This business endeavor was no different. We looked at the operation costs and he began to search for the ideal location. We found one! In February, we signed the lease in Conyers, got the place renovated to meet our needs, and in March we got our first equipment delivery. We had a successful grand opening on May 21, 2022. And we are here still growing and pushing our brand. Ryan, along with our popcorn chefs, is continuing to expand our gourmet popcorn flavors. Popcorn Remix now offers over 40 flavors, including Crab Legs, Hot Wings Lemon Pepper, and Buttered Pecan.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been as smooth as we would have liked it to be. We, like many other businesses, had to endure the supply chain issues caused by the pandemic. It took months to get all of our popcorn machines in. Ryan also had to stay on top of the company who produced our sign.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Ryan is a logistics analysis for Coke, and he co-owns Xtreme Paintball Conyers.
Keya is an educator who has served two school districts for about 20 years. She is currently an assistant principal in Rockdale County and a doctoral student at the University of West Georgia.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
We were fortunate to have Uncle Greg and his wife to support us through this journey. They serve as our mentors. Additionally, joining the Rockdale County Chamber of Commerce has been beneficial as well.
