Conversations with Ryan Bars

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Bars. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Ryan Bars got his start as an engineer in Miami, where he attended SAE in 2011. He then went on to intern for Supa Dups, Lu Diaz, and Ben Billions at Mix Studios (then became Sobe Swag Labs). There he spent countless nights perfecting his craft and learning from some of the best to ever do it. From starting in the studio to touring with his band The Norm (Bonnaroo 2018), then back into music production in Atlanta, there isn’t much of the music industry that Bars hasn’t seen. He has experience with artists such as Lil Durk, Jeremih, Poo Bear, Trina, Anthony Hamilton, Ski Mask, Matisyahu, Maffio, Rittz, and many more. He is now currently based out of Atlanta, GA. With more than 12 years of experience in the music industry, Bars is ready to take your music to the next level and can hold his own with anyone in the industry.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road by any means. I did a ton of free work early in my career as an intern, then left the studio world to pursue being an artist in a band with my brother. After about four years of playing shows and touring, I found myself back in the studio scene in Atlanta in 2017 and had to pretty much start over being in a new city. After interning at BNDWTH studios, I quickly rose through the ranks and really polished up on my production and mixing skills. I then moved on to work as a recording and mixing engineer out of Bravo Ocean Studios. Last year I branched out and started working as a freelancer in various recording studios around the Atlanta area as well as operating out of my home studio. Some of the biggest struggles in the music industry are the sacrifices of sleep and free time. It can be difficult to maintain relationships. Things don’t necessarily get easier. The struggles change as you progress. The more in demand you become, the more people try to monopolize your time. It’s all about finding your balance.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a music producer and mixing engineer. I specialize in Pop, Rock, Hip Hop, and R&B. Some of the work I’m most proud of would be mixing “Of Illusion” a full album for the band Tropidelic. The album included features from Matisyahu, Devin The Dude, Dirty Heads and more. I’m also proud of the recording I did on Bobby Sessions’ album “Manifest”. I think what sets me apart from other engineers is the fact that I’m an artist myself so I know what an artist wants to hear immediately after they record a take. I’m very quick in the studio and can perform most effects someone asks for in a matter of seconds or minutes. I can also provide vocal production advice when the time calls for it. I always stay up to date with the latest plug-ins and technology so you can rest assured that your music will sound its absolute best and be competitive with today’s hottest artists.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the mixed cultures of the city. I think there is a good blend here and there is something for everyone in Atlanta. You just need to know where to find it. As far as the music industry is concerned, I think Atlanta has had a global impact. Especially with hip hop and the Trap subgenre. It started in Memphis, but I believe it was made popular by way of Atlanta. On the other hand, I don’t like the way that trap music has influenced the youth. I think kids look up to gangster rappers and it breeds crime and gun violence in the city. Even kids in the suburbs will get guns and try to mimic what they hear in songs. It’s somewhat of a double-edged sword.
