Conversations with Savanna Hawkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Savanna Hawkins.

Savanna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
During my freshman year of high school, I took a class called Media Production that is taught by the amazing Roni Henderson-Day. In this class, we learned the basics of photography and photoshop. Everyone is required to take pictures as photo assignments for a grade, so I took pictures of my peers, teachers, and classes for the grade. As a result, my teacher gave us a project to complete in April that would display a student’s everyday life or business in the style of a magazine. During this time one of my friends was making bracelets and she was the one I interviewed for the project on the business side. While showcasing her bracelets through photos, I instantly knew that photography was something that I wanted to take seriously. Telling her how to pose, capturing her beauty, and seeing her reaction to the photos really made me excited. At the end of April, I had the opportunity to take pictures at our school prom and I was thrilled! My photos came out so good, my teacher told me to create an Instagram page so I could send out the photos. Savvy Shot It was then born and my pictures are posted on that Instagram page. I posted the pictures on Instagram and people loved them which made me feel really good so I continued to take pictures in and outside of school. Today I am 16 years old, and an upcoming photographer in Columbia, South Carolina. It’s only been a year since I started taking photography seriously which indicates, I am still learning but I have made progress and I will continue to grow.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I was blessed to have my Media Production class as a resource when I decided to start my business. In addition to receiving a camera from the school, I was able to learn photography and Photoshop there. I was also handed my late grandfather’s camera as my personal camera. Things aren’t reasonably easy because I’m not where I want to be at the moment. I believe I still have a lot to learn, so I’d want a mentor who can give me in-depth instruction in photography as well as hands-on experience with editing and detail.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a rising photographer who also enjoys doing graphic design. I’m well known for capturing pictures during sporting events and other significant occasions. Basketball, football, prom, and birthday parties are a few examples of events. I’m most proud of myself for being able to step outside of my comfort zone with photography and for discovering a passion that doesn’t feel like work. My work is original and innovative, which makes me stand out from the crowd. My lens captures the energy and atmosphere in each photo. I try to create a vision in my head for each photo and have it come to life. The goal is to have each photo tell a story and for it to be individually tailored for each client. I will make sure that my clients stand out in the best way possible. I believe if someone pays for professional photos then they should receive nothing but the best and If you book with me then that’s what you’ll receive. I am always looking to expand my clientele and I’m ready to give every client a Savvy Shot It experience.
