Today we’d like to introduce you to Shà David.
Hi Shà, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began working with a few more experienced constituents in Detroit. I decided to start producing myself after realizing waiting on production to be done wasn’t helping me move forward. More recently I’ve collaborated with like-minded artists, and now friends who support my hunger for achieving set goals. In August of 2022, I opened a show for acclaimed Detroit-based artist, producer and DJ Shigeto. Also, I’ve enjoyed other collaborations, alongside John FM another very talented and notable peer of mine. Making the decision to take my own seat; at a predominantly male-occupied table has been very beneficial, but with each accomplishment, I’ve learned to see further and expand upon my vision and desires artistically.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been a struggle learning to maneuver independently. With Battling the everyday struggle of finding time to create, consume, and distribute your work from that process. Doing these things while maintaining a living and work space financially, adds a bit of weight but when I compare the emotions behind impulsively agreeing to deals out of desperation. To risk the possibility of drawing the shorter stick inside deals with labels, having patience is easier to maintain in these times.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a recording artist, Producer, and singer-songwriter. I’ve collaborated with many notable artists alongside releasing my own work. This year I’ll be releasing an EP titled “EP1”. It’s an introduction to my work as an artist. Recently I’ve been constantly posting the phrase “sonic innovation. I believe most can agree we’re experiencing an over saturated music industry at the moment. Resetting the bar is necessary and I believe that’s what my music will do. Not overnight but overtime. I don’t desire to be on the “ if you like this artist then you’ll love me!” Type beat. My music is born from my influences; but not an imitation of another artist who I admire. Recycling is inevitable music theory is proof of that but authenticity is imperative for me.
What were you like growing up?
I’m an only child, Growing up my family had been very nomadic. My mother is a go-getter. Wherever the money was we went. My father was allowed more flexibility in his employment because of that. Still very working-class energy though. We’ve lived in Atlanta, Detroit, Ohio, back to Detroit. Reflecting on finding my place has been difficult. Tyler the creator I believe said he was “ too white for black kids and too black to white kids.” That resonated intensely because it defines that versatility taken for granted in youth. Duality and range are important, I believe if you don’t have range to involve yourself with different people your success is limited.
