Conversations with Shana LaFrance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shana LaFrance.

Shana, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always loved makeup, but I didn’t know how to put it all on properly. My friends and I would get ready to go out to the nightclubs and they would always ask me to help them put their makeup on. I didn’t know exactly what I was doing, but it always ended up working out. My signature was full coverage foundation, a tad bit of blush, sometimes a small wing liner(that I learned the tape trick from a YouTuber to make sure it was straight, ha!), and a bold red lip. MAC’s Ruby Woo was my end all to be all, if I didn’t have it on, people would question where my red lips were. During the pandemic, I would watch a ton of youtube videos and I could never get my makeup the way I wanted to and it frustrated me. My husband suggested that I take a class, so I found a place so I could get my certification and finally be able to glam myself up. On the first day of lessons, I was so intrigued with all of the shapes and color matching and the pure artistry that I seemed to forget I knew that this was something that I wanted to do. I’ve never looked back, and I’ve had some amazing opportunities within these past couple of years!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest challenge is believing in yourself. Someone once told me that what you’re feeling will show in your artistry. When you’re confident in who you are, your work will be undeniably good work. I think as an artist that you’re sensitive about your work. I’ve self-sabotaged by not letting go of work and just accepting that it wasn’t great work. Accepting it wasn’t great allows me to become even better though. As an artist, we will forever be growing and learning.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a makeup artist that specializes in print and natural looks. A picture is worth a thousand words and I want my art to speak loudly. What sets me apart from others is that I pride myself on knowing about all skin tones and how to work with them. I know a lot of artists, if you go to their portfolios and Instagram pages, it shows pictures of one certain skin tone. I’m well versed in all skin tones. I’m obsessed with the broad spectrum of beauty and light in everyone.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
The thing that matters the most to me is to be around things that bring me joy. Don’t get so caught up in your family, friends, spouse, or even your children that you forget what joy is. Joy is a choice, and I bring it into my life each and every day with the gratitude I feel. To figure out what your passions are and be living in your gift is an amazing feeling!
