Hi Shange, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Peace peace, I’m Shange Jaara Lilaa, a creative soul from Washington DC. My love affair with the arts began early with my mother cheering me on as I pulled myself up to the living room table to dance before I could even walk. My artistic journey allowed me to connect with myself and others on a deeper level, while my spiritual gifts enabled me to see and understand things beyond the ordinary. This wild, rebellious spirit of mine has always been driven by a desire to uplift and support those I love; especially the overlooked and underserved.
After studying sociology and working in education and community health, I found myself dedicating all my energy to others dreams. This realization sparked the creation of Rebel Assemblage, a community that embraces wholistic wellness through creativity, spirituality, and connectivity. What started as crafting medicine pieces and self-care products for personal healing grew into a broader mission of supporting women from all walks of life. Through event planning, trainings, hand-crafted self care products, and wellness experiences, Rebel Assemblage aims to empower women to fulfill their purpose and inspire their communities.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been everything BUT a smooth road. I’ve experienced the highest highs and the lowest lows on this journey. There have been moments when business was booming so much to the point where I felt overwhelmed funding my business out of pocket, creating all of my products by hand, handling the marketing alone; all while teaching myself, to the best of my ability, how to sustain a black female owned business. There have been times when I’ve questioned myself and my vision. There have been times when I’ve known for a FACT that my gifts, my knowledge, my heart, and my ability to successfully lead myself and others was unquestionable. It’s been a rollercoaster ride for sure.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Most people where I’m from know me as a singer and actress, but I am also passionate about technology, nature, hands-on craftsmanship, and curating sacred spaces for women to practice wellness. What sets me apart is my commitment to the process of bringing visions to life, both my own and those of others. I believe in the principle of paying it forward by offering knowledge, resources, time, and energy to those who often feel overlooked. In this community, we don’t believe in gatekeeping because everyone has a unique and specific purpose that can be unlocked through self-awareness, creativity, and a supportive community.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Ah, luck! It’s such an intriguing concept. While many see luck as mere chance, I believe it also involves the intentions we set and the actions we take. This mix of effort and alignment feels like a lucky formula to me. Throughout my journey, I’ve encountered challenges that seemed impossible to overcome. In those moments, I often questioned how I would persevere. However, I’ve come to see these challenges as opportunities for growth and resilience. The ability to transform adversity into personal development is, in itself, a form of luck. For me, luck in my business is deeply connected to divine alignment and protection. I believe my honorable ancestors and God have placed me on this path for a higher purpose, ensuring my journey, lineage, and mission are safeguarded. This sense of protection and purpose is what I consider to be luck and infinite blessings.
