Today we’d like to introduce you to Shantina Lowe.
Hi Shantina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a family of musicians. Everyone sang, played an instrument, or did something creative. Music has always been second nature to me. My dad always made my siblings and I sing together at church and every school he taught music in. When I got to an age where I could choose what path I wanted to take, I still chose music. I even followed in my dad’s footsteps and began to teach music myself.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There were many times where we’ve gone through hardships as a family because we were so large. My parents had six children at a young age and it can be hard to navigate your life in addition to your children’s lives when you’re just trying to survive. But music was our refuge. And God blessed us to stay together through everything and for us to see success in music today. Another major issue was finding people in the industry that I can truly trust to work in integrity like me. But I’ve learned that what’s done in the dark always comes to the light, especially if you are an honest person. Eventually, you will attract what you are.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Well, I’m a black female musician. I have a lot of intersections because of my background. I can be very churchy and spiritual. I can also be a little ratchet. I’m also a theatre kid and I love to be goofy. I love to dance- especially on TikTok, lol. My brand and my music incorporate all of those things and more. I don’t mind being myself. I love all facets of myself. I embrace who I naturally am, even when it isn’t popular. My confidence speaks through every piece of content I release. But my favorite thing about myself of all is that I’m not ashamed to say that I am where I am because of God… I just love to twerk, lol. I’m also proud that I’ve gotten to work with some very notable artists including Kanye West, Carrie Underwood, Karen Clark Sheard, West Side Boogie, Smino, Tasha Page Lockhart and more!
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My dad used to always say, “your last job is your next job”. So I think it’s important to do great work and leave a great impression wherever I go. I love my ability to read a room or atmosphere and give it what it needs. That’s how you leave a lasting impression in my opinion. People don’t forget how the girl with the big orange Afro made them feel.
