Today, we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Osborne.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I first became an artist as a little girl. My mother and father were both inspirations behind my career at some point. My mother was into fashion and cosmetology in her early years and my dad was a carpenter for 40+ years. This will give you an understanding of me and how much I do or have done.
I started out like anyone drawing on regular loose-leaf paper with a No.2 pencil. And I practiced daily. I started being recognized for my talent and was invited to draw the front cover of my Stepping-Up Ceremony in Kindergarten. Jumping to years ahead, I was also asked to draw the front cover of my yearbook in HS. I attended the High School of Graphic Communication Arts Where I concentrated on Visual Art, Still Life, and Graphic Design.
I was also introduced to Architecture and fell in love with it. I graduated and attended New York City College of Technology majoring in Architecture Technology. I later worked for two Architectural firms here in NYC and loved the work I did; however, it didn’t work out and I was let go due to the pandemic taking a toll on my career.
This minor setback set me up to start my own business as a Graphics and Custom Designer with my fiancé. The name of the company is Living Legends Custom Designs. We basically design everything from Logos, Websites, motion graphics, custom jackets, custom pops, tumblers, and new 3D printing.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Some struggles along the way have been not being able to keep a steady pace of income. We love what we do and would love to continue to do that full time but realistically, multiple sources of income are a requirement. It just wasn’t enough. I thought about giving up on it so many times. I push now because I enjoy creating even if the income isn’t there.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Custom and Graphic Designer. I design logos for small businesses, content creators, and corporations. I also draw erotic art and book covers. I am currently working on illustrating a few books for family and friends. I customize jackets, tumblers, and purses.
I recently began customizing funko pops and dioramas and I just started getting into 3D modeling and printing. I’m proud of everything that I do and I believe that what sets me apart from others is that I can do so much. While some may only be able to focus on one part of the design, I have the skill, talent, and capability to do it all.
I’ve been featured in a few magazines and interviews. I was asked to host and be a guest judge for a few cosplay competitions, for I am also a cosplayer and I design my own cosplays and props. I’ve dabbled in set design and a dream of mine is to become a set designer having full creative freedom to designs sets and props for plays or movies/tv shows. I’ve also been allowed to showcase my work at varies conventions and expos relating to gaming. I also sometimes stream my progress on Twitch and have a few people looking on while I work. My handle on there is ‘Shelbynicolecosplay’.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Determination: I love making people happy through my creations. If they aren’t overjoyed when I’m done, then I don’t feel like I’ve done a great job.
