Conversations with Shikeria Rogers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shikeria Rogers

Hi Shikeria, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started doing hair as a kid, when baby alive dolls were trending. I ended up doing elementary friends hair up until 2am on school nights charging $50 for large knotless, $75 for medium, and $100 for small. I took a pause from braiding in middle and highschool because of sports which took majority of my time. Then after highschool, going to Albany State University…. I started back up doing hair again in my dorm room. I was missing class just to make money in my dorm, saving up a lot of money, I realized in that moment that college was not for me but was a great experience fresh out of highschool. I wanted to start working in a more professional environment so I prayed and manifested working in a salon right after Covid and being considered a dropout college student. I started to build my clientele, which grew even more once I worked in my first salon which was located in Savannah ga at the time. Eventually I grew not only as a person, but my business grew, as well as my skills. Now on this day I love hair and I love what I do, I travel now doing hair, going to Jacksonville and Atlanta. Now I’m currently located in Atlanta with more opportunities and blessings and I’m very grateful for every last bit of it thanks to my God, my Lord & Savior.

Ps. I used to be scared of hair when I was baby, and I use to think that hair was spiders, now I absolutely love hair to the fullest and it always finds a way to follow my every footsteps. 😭

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being in the hair industry isn’t hard but it’s not easy. For me, I started off with knotless…and worked my way up to doing stitch. I threw a lot of sales just to get clients in, and to practice on my skill set so that I could charge my worth. Also, through the way I was able to determine which type of clientele I wanted to service which are only 7 and up. Besides that, I was able to meet so many clients that, some, became friends, and others family. However I also learned that I wouldn’t be able to service and satisfy everybody but I kept going, and made sure I kept everything professional.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I do braids and tapeins, I specialize in stitch braids, and I’m known for braiding with nails on. Even with short hair. I’m proud that I have grew overtime, and even grew my faith in God with our business, what sets me apart is simply because I stay positive and my energy with my clients are pure, genuine, and nurturing. I don’t do hair just for the money, I’d actually do it for free if need to be. I love making my clients feel beautiful I’m a girls girl 🥹 so I understand how important beauty is to us women.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory is when I was at my grandma house on my dad side, and at the time we used the electric floor fans to keep the house cool. And my family use to grab a batch of hair and put it in front of the fan and would tell me it’s a spider so every time, I would run away from the hair 😭
