Conversations with Shirley Vaughn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shirley Vaughn.

Hi Shirley, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been fascinated by motorcycles. I still remember riding on the back of my uncle’s bike — holding onto his coat and trying to peek around to see where we were going, until I finally relaxed and just started to enjoy the ride. And yes, I’ll never forget the burn on my leg from the tailpipe he warned me not to touch. I didn’t listen, and I paid for it with a scar that became my first badge of motorcycle memory.

Growing up, only the men in my family rode — my uncles, my dad, and my brother. Back then, it wasn’t common to see a woman on a motorcycle, but that never dimmed the spark inside me. For years, I dreamed of riding my own. After months of researching and shopping around, I finally took a leap of faith — I bought my first motorcycle before I even knew how to ride it. There was something about motorcycles that just spoke to my spirit. Every time I saw another woman out there riding, I couldn’t help but cheer her on and think, one day, that’s going to be me.

Now, that dream is my reality. When little girls see me and other women on our bikes, the look on their faces brings me so much joy. It reminds me that by simply doing what I love, I’m helping them see what’s possible — that they, too, can chase any dream they set their hearts on. Riding gives me freedom, strength, and clarity. It’s my time to reflect, breathe, and be thankful.

I’m a mother of three, a wife, and a woman with a full-time career. Life gets busy, but taking time for yourself — to do what makes you happy — is how you stay centered, keep your light shining, and live your life in the sunshine. I enjoy ATV riding, long-distance trips on my bike, and the feeling of the open road beneath me. I love to dance, spend time with family and friends, and simply enjoy my life. My husband and I share a deep passion for riding — it’s something that connects us and fills our hearts with joy every time we hit the road together.

Through my journey, I hope to inspire other women to believe in themselves, to take that first ride, and to experience the freedom that comes from doing something that makes them feel alive. Whether it’s down the street or across the country, the open road is waiting.

Fate whispers to the rider, “You cannot withstand the storm.” The rider whispers back, “I am the STORM.” This is how I live my life & this is who I am.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, the ride has not been smooth- there were many obstacles and life challenges I faced along the way- I was a single mom for a long time and I never thought I would be the one inspiring others. When once upon a time, I was that person that needed inspiration. I never thought I would find my own or find something that I love and enjoy doing.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the Director of Operations at the Sonesta Atlanta Airport North, where I oversee all operational departments in a dynamic, full-service hotel located just minutes from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. With a career rooted in hospitality, I began my journey as a Night Auditor in Birmingham, Alabama, and through hard work, determination, and a passion for service, I rose through the ranks to become a General Manager and now a Director of Operations.

In my position I serves a diverse clientele, including airline crews and travelers from around the world, and I take great pride in ensuring every guest experiences genuine hospitality and exceptional service.

Beyond my professional success, I’m the proud President of Atlanta Female Riders (AFR) — a powerful community of women motorcyclists who inspire, support, and empower one another both on and off the road.

As a mother, wife of 16 years, and accomplished hospitality leader, my journey is a testament to perseverance, faith, and positivity. I believe that kindness and respect are the foundation of every great relationship — professional or personal. Her My guiding principle is simple yet profound: “Treat people how you want to be treated. Everyone deserves respect, and everyone is human at the end of the day.”

I have been told my infectious smile, uplifting energy, and ability to lead with both strength and grace continue to inspire those around me to rise above challenges and embrace life with dignity and pride.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Julie Vaughters and Heidi Brau have both played a major role in my professional development. They both help me to step out of my shell and challenge me in ways that pushed me against the odds and helped over come a lot of fears and helped me believe in my self.

Terri Benn for believing and trusting in me to take over Atlanta Female Riders and to continue the growth of Atlanta Female Riders (AFR)
