Today we’d like to introduce you to Sora Yi-chung
Sora , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It all started with a proposal… As a now, husband and wife duo, our business, White Cloud Decor came from our own personal engagement story. In the Winter of 2022, My husband proposed to me with the help of my mother and sister. They designed a beautiful backyard proposal set up at our house and I was in complete awe when I saw it. That design then became a talking point amongst our friends and family after we posted our proposal photos on Instagram. Shortly after, we started getting DMs asking who Alex hired to decorate my proposal and that’s when the lightbulb went off! With my passion for creativity and Alex’s background in business & sales, we decided we could turn this into a legitimate business. We spent 2023 decorating free events for friends and family as we were trying to build our brand up and get our name out there. This allowed us to build our portfolio and create our social media presence as well as gather content for our company website that was being developed. In the last month of that year, we finally got our first paid client and funny enough it was a proposal. That was a full circle moment for us and from there we’ve been fortunate enough to get consistent business since the start of the new year. We started off as a team of 2 and since then we’ve brought on our brilliant Director of Marketing, Sunny Yi. Sunny is my sister and has been a great addition to the team. We hope to scale and grow our business in the future but for now, its all in the family. The events we get hired for range from birthdays, bridal and baby showers, engagement parties, proposals and corporate events.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Its been far from a smooth road for us, but anything worth while will have its fair share of bumps and bruises. We’ve had many challenges along the way like; understanding the market in terms of how we should price our services, managing and storing our inventory, traveling with our equipment and finding the right clientele.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We craft and curate specialized decor for any given event. We specialize in balloon styling, florals, backdrops, table decor and equipment rentals like bar/dessert carts, tables and chairs. We’re most known for our floral designs, especially our floral arches that are used as backdrops for pictures or just added decoration to liven up the room. I’m most proud of those designs because I love working with flowers. I’ve always had a passion and love for them. We do our best to work with our own styles, but of course taking into account what’s trending, and finding ways to make it our own. I feel like everyone eventually finds their audience and we aim to be our own unique selves.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I’m a big podcast girlie and enjoy listening to leadership podcasts because I feel like that type of content provides good insights into teaching me on how to grow as a business owner and entrepreneur. One of my favorite podcasts to listen to is Craig Groeschel Leadership Podcast.
I also do my research in floral arrangements and design, learning what flowers best pair with each other and how to make them look as beautiful and realistic as possible. Flower Love by Kristen Griffith-Vanderyacht has been a personal favorite.
