Conversations with Terry Suave

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terry Suave.

Hi Terry, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina (U.S.A.) in 1995, TERRYSUAVE is a Graphic Designer, Photographer, and Artist. As an Artist, he is deeply dedicated to his craft, exploring different tools and methods to further his exploration of photography as a medium, but he is not limited by media. Although his photography practice began in early 2011, TERRYSUAVE received his BA in Photography from the Art Institute of Charlotte in 2017. In 2014, Terry was featured in his first art show, Random Thoughts, where he showed water color paintings. Most recently, Terry received the 2019 Roll Up CLT Fellowship award, receiving an unrestricted honorarium, professional development support and mentorship. His work is published online and in print in Travel Noire, i-D, The Voice UK, and The Charlotte Observer. He has self-published work including “Blanco Y Negro” and on going series “Snaps”, design work for The Whitaker Grp, and Art Direction for Heirs Entertainment. He also is the Co-Founder of Dreamstudios and runs an online store called The Corner Store.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Being from Winston-Salem and doing the things I do has been quite the challenge even though it’s the “city of arts & innovation”. I had to move to Charlotte and build my name up just to create opportunities back home or anywhere else. Then trying to use social media as a way to generate income and using it like a portfolio without burning out really does take a toll on you and you have to take breaks from it. And being a human on top of all that is a challenge in itself. But going through that shaped who I am today.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Photographer, Cinematographer, Graphic Designer, Artist, and DJ. Some of my photography work is published online and in print in Travel Noire, i-D, The Voice UK, The Charlotte Observer & Queen City Nerve. I have self-published work including “Blanco Y Negro” and on going series “Snaps”. On the design side, some of my early design the A Ma Maniere Air Force 1’s, Social Status Adidas 4D, & Social Status “Free Lunch” Dunk Mids to name a few.

What I’m most proud of is being able to create in any art from to be honest. To have an idea and actually be able to execute if from beginning to without any help is one thing I’m proud of. But what I’m most proud of is building my personal community and being able to lean on homies and actually asking for help when I need it. Before, I had to do all the things by myself because I didn’t have that, but now i do,
