Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Brown.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started doing hair when I was in high school. Although I loved it, I spent a few years in college pursuing several different degrees I thought I wanted. Then, finally after taking some time off, I went back to school to pursue my cosmetology license. I have been a hair stylist now for five years. I have two wonderful bosses who allow me the freedom to be creative and to grow my own clientele to fit my needs! I love being able to help people reach their hair goals, whether that be through color, cut, style or education.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I was always concerned about entering into a field that can focus so much on vanity. Women today have to conquer the world and still be beautiful and perfectly maintained. My heart is to teach women how to care for themselves and to have grace when they are having an off day. Beauty is important and looking our best is important, but it can be so cutthroat. Young women nowadays are so insecure to walk out of the house without a full face on. We are all trying to live up to that Instagram model, instead of embracing life and ourselves as we are. I have discovered that by being a stylist, I have the opportunity to pour into these women that they are just so beautiful in who they are.
What should we know about Level Spa Salon? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I enjoy all aspects of being a stylist. I love the change from one to another. I began at Level only specializing in hair cutting but in the past few years have been able to return to doing color. Color might be my favorite. I love the chemistry behind why the color works. I love neutralizing and accentuating colors! Vivid colors are another area where I get to play the most. I can determine underlying pigments in the hair and concoct a special formula to get us to our unicorn goals.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I think we can be our own toughest competition. Whether we don’t feel we deserve to step up and lead, that we don’t have the experience, or we allow distractions to come in. We can obsess over being better or better liked than our coworkers instead of setting goals and going for them. My bosses are two incredible examples of female leadership! They left a very competitive corporate salon and began their own. They have personally trained dozens of stylists and helped them on their path! This is also their 10th year of serving clients, and they continue to grow! I think when we set our goals, and we focus, there isn’t much we cannot accomplish.
