Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Chau.
Hi Tiffany, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m Tiffany Chau, also known as Tiffblot, a local watercolor (and occasionally digital) artist born and raised in Georgia.
My artwork celebrates all the slices of life in growing up Asian American. You may have seen my art locally in places like Rebel Teahouse (Decatur, GA), Momocon, Anime Weekend Atlanta, and other pop-ups!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In the modern era of art, we rely so heavily on social media to get our footing. Because of that, there’s a strong compulsion to produce artwork based on what “sells”.
It took some time to figure out a balance of what was right for me, and a lot of self-reflection to make sure my creativity wasn’t being pushed and pulled by the wrong tides. While it’s not a bad thing to create trendy artwork, I’ve never wanted to be influenced by anything that wasn’t a part of me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I draw most of my inspiration for my watercolor artwork through the joy of being Asian American. My paintings are a form of visual storytelling that captures the warmth and nostalgia of culture, while sometimes acknowledging the bittersweetness of it too.
Though there’s a lot of grief and trauma that can be found in being part of a ‘third culture’, there is also so much happiness in the nuances I’ve found by revisiting little corners of Asian American childhood in my art. I’ve found more love for who I am through illustrating the small cozy in-between moments with family, comfort food, heirlooms, tributes to iconic characters in Asian media, and even the things that make me American, too.
As much as the goal of my art is to touch the hearts of people, I also strive to give back to my local minority community. Without multicultural places like Buford Highway, many immigrant families like my own would not have found a place to call home, and my love for identity would not be the same.
My favorite projects have been for local non-profits in support of providing comfort and resources to current and future immigrant communities, such as We Love Buford Highway and Asian American Advocacy Fund!! I get to work alongside amazing AAPI leaders and contribute to what makes Georgia home for me. For all the impact I have made in these communities, they make an even bigger difference in me as a person and an artist.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Truthfully, I’m still a work in progress! But I do my best to be as genuine as I can. My artwork is a reflection of myself as a person and the colors I see in the world around me. I can only be true by honoring the inner child who grew up in the South with limited space to freely celebrate being Asian.
