Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Stewart.
Hi Tiffany, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Tiffany, and I’m a writer. It’s my identity. It’s who I am. If you don’t mind, I would like to take you on a literary journey today. I will talk a little about who I am and share a few pieces of my work that I feel embody some essential lessons I learned in business.
I delayed writing this for almost three years. I hesitated to confront the ugly parts of me since I already struggled to see the beauty I possessed. I let fear and uncertainty, along with the potential judgment from others, subconsciously invalidate what I had to say and even who I was. I allowed suppressed feelings of rejection, and all the heavy things I carried hid the light I was supposed to hold high. I let “no’s,” “not now’s,” and “why’s” stifle the life of my dreams and then proceeded to accept a reality that paled in comparison.
Somewhere along this journey, I learned to find strength in all I am. I am at peace, and there’s not one soul who could validate my existence, my value, and my royalty more than I. I learned there’s power in peace. The same power I had given away, foolishly thinking someone else was more equipped to weld it. I learned the power was mine.
Writing helped me realize there was power all around and power within me. Power running through my veins, power in my pain, power in every tear that fell onto my cheek, power in prayers, power in my thoughts, power in every word written on a page. Power in telling pieces of my story and the things I learned along the way, not for accolades or recognition but to share in hopes that it would help someone.
Becoming a writer truly opened my eyes to the power of story. Before becoming a writer, I had a story, but I wasn’t the one writing it. The literal and figurative action of picking up the pen is when things changed for me.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I spent a long time not realizing my value. Now I will spend my time helping others understand how valuable they are. I remember thinking my loyalty and love in a relationship were synonymous with what I was willing to endure. Can you imagine? I’m a woman with degrees from both Howard University and Harvard University, yet I honestly didn’t understand the value of who I was. I was a ride-or-die, and I thought that was what it was supposed to be in a relationship. I was wrong. You must set clear boundaries. When you set boundaries, it’s simply saying that you are sure of what you want. Most people like me think boundaries are for others, but they aren’t. It wasn’t until recently when I was in counseling, that I learned that. I was tasked with naming my boundaries and immediately thought of them concerning others. You can’t control what anyone else will or will not do; you only control what you will tolerate. Your boundaries are for you, not for anyone else. They are the standards you uphold and others must maintain if they want to engage with you.
During my career as a School Leader in the New York City Public School System, I worked with some dedicated colleagues in the Bronx. The Bronx taught me many lessons, but one of my favorite takeaways from the school was “Non-negotiables.” The “non-negotiables” were plain and simple rules that could not be bent. They were not up for discussion. Let me tell you, you need some “non-negotiables.” My poetry taught me how to be a good businesswoman. Know my value, be creative, say what I mean, and know when to start and when something is finished.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
