Conversations with Timofey Abel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Timofey Abel.

Timofey Abel

Timofey, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in Moscow, Russia, and immigrated to New York City at the age of 7 as a political refugee. I became interested in 35mm street photography at the age of 16, but always took great interest in the creative arts, including painting, music, cinematography and writing. I grew up on the road, having visited over 30 countries before turning 18. Culture, history and diversity are elements I value in both my personal life and professional work. My documentary street photography slowly transitioned into portrait and fashion photography when I moved up to South Carolina from South Florida. My photography is often described as emotional, personal and dramatic. “The story behind an image matters more than the image itself” I often state, highlighting the importance of storytelling as well as connection to the subject being photographed. Currently, I live in Atlanta, GA. As a young photographer, I emphasizes the effect that visual arts have on a society, and how photography impacts and reflects culture.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, particularly after I started understanding and learning about the industry more.

There’s less struggle if you understand what’s truly important. On the other hand, if you’re willing to do anything to chase your dreams – I guess it really isn’t that important what “struggles” you face. I notice that for some, the final destination is all they have their mind set to. In turn, they’re willing to strip humanity in order to achieve the little power they might acquire.

I struggled with success. I had the wrong interpretation of it, and for a little bit I tried to adjust and fit into what I thought would bring me success and true creative freedom. I now know that that is something I have at this moment. I see success in being able to have people around me that can help me execute a vision. There’s no need for a seal of approval from anyone else. It’s freeing and liberating, and manifests a more creatively potent mindset.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Human connection is the most important thing. It’s always unique, and changing and surprising. The truth is the most beautiful thing. I try to uncover it in every model I work in, and I apply the same principle in all areas of life.

Photography is a fun medium to create in. It’s straightforward and simple with endless possibilities. Anyone can set themselves apart from everyone if they hone in on what makes them themselves. That’s the beauty of us all having unique experiences and lives.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Everyone just wants to be happy and seen. I’ve learned to take the right things seriously – things that will truly matter in 10 years.

Quality work is important, but it’s more important to stay balanced and focus on having a quality life. This means encouraging and supporting your loved ones, and protecting your peace.

In photography, I try to do just that – make others feel comfortable and relaxed.
