Conversations with Tina Baker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tina Baker.

Tina Baker

Hi Tina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I go by the name Runway because all my life I have been tall and had a switch in my walk. Since I was two years old, I have been dancing, modeling, singing, and acting. I was one of nine siblings, and we would put on shows for our parents from there.

They knew I was destined for greatness. I joined a dance team, traveled the world, and learned! Now as an adult, I focus on modeling a lot. I am using the runway as a stepping stone into the business. I come from a city named Camden, New Jersey, where most don’t make it out. So, for me to be traveling the world doing what I love means everything to me.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has not been easy. As a kid, I lost my closest friend and love. Losing Kenny pushed me to chase his dreams and mine! He pushed me every day to be strong and depend on myself. I was the kid my parents didn’t worry about. I paid my phone bill, brought my uniform for school, etc. When I was old enough to work I did just that.

I lost my mother and both grandparents in the last two years. So. it has been very stressful being the daughter everyone expects greatness from while grieving alone because everyone assumes I’m strong and ok! However, these struggles have made me the person I am today. It shows me I can get through anything! The struggle made me who I am.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a model, runway trainer, Hip-Hop dancer, and choreographer. I am a rapper, actress, and host of events. I am an all-around person with stage presence and star power! I was featured on an episode of Dancing with the Stars when I was 14.

I broke three Hurdle Records while running track from 6th grade to my junior year of college. I speak on panels and advise kids who live in places like Camden! I am a Mentor and superstar in my hood!

If we knew you were growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was very bougie and girly on some days and very tomboyish and rough on other days. If I had a skirt on, I absolutely could not get dirty.

But if I had shorts, I would play football on the block with the boys and my brother. I still made time to be the kid leading assemblies at school, and the captain of my dance team and ran track. I was a very busy kid. And as an adult I still am!
