Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonie Mcelveen
Hi Tonie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been drawing all my life, basically since I’ve been able to hold a pencil. After high school I went to college at both Itawamba Community College and the University of Mississippi, graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. While there I started selling tshirts based around my comic characters ROADKILL in 2016. Since graduating from college, I’ve continued to create new merchandise and work alongside other companies to help build their brands.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely wasn’t a smooth road, after graduation things were slow for a while but in 2020 I was granted some new opportunities that helped me out. Just some of the struggles that I dealt with was issues with networking, personal artist development, and keeping my expectations realistic.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a digital illustrator,, graphic designer and comic book artist. I mainly specialize in surrealism, portraits, and cartoony illustrations. I’m most known for my digital portraits of famous rappers and some of my friends that I’ve done, along with my comic book ROADKILL. My proudest moment would be being featured in Sarahfest in 2020, having one of my art pieces displayed on the side of a building. The thing that sets me apart the most would definitely be my art style, its usually what draws in people and what I like most about my art.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Simply by just giving something my all, win or lose that’s what is important to me.
