Today we’d like to introduce you to Ty McBride.
Hi Ty, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I originally started drawing as a kid. I have always been more on the quiet/shy side so art was an outlet. I used to see the drawings that my mom did and that sparked my mind. Even though drawing was always an outlet, I didn’t start painting until I was in law school. During that time I was spending a lot of time by myself and my anxiety was getting out of control so I needed something else to relax me. Painting became that thing. That was in 2017 and I’ve been practicing and growing ever since.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not! A smooth road would have been way too easy. My biggest hurdle has been my introverted nature. It is very hard for me to get out of my shell and network to get my art out there. I have gotten better over the years but it’s always a work in progress. The other struggle is one that is probably the same for all artists: money. It’s not always easy to get the money for things like supplies or be confident enough to ask for the price that art is worth.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Outside of art, I work in corporate law for an investment firm. My work life is completely different from my art life. Corporate law is very type A and doesn’t have much room for creativity so I spend most of my day at a desk and reading from a computer screen. What sets me apart from others is the fact that I am also an artist. I’m lucky that I get to use both sides of my brain and get to see things from multiple perspectives.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The most important thing I learned during Covid-19 was the importance of taking a break! Burnout is real. I took time away from both painting and work and I came back so much better.
