Conversations with Victoria Dickerson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Dickerson.

Hi Victoria, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my love for writing in 2nd grade. My teacher Mrs. Ellison thought I should enter our school writing fair. Instead of winning the fair for just my class, I won it for the whole 2nd grade! At the end of the year, our teacher held something she called the Kids Choice Awards where we vote for our classmates for certain titles. My classmates voted me future author of course. My mom talked to Stephanie Ballard of Ballard Publishing and she looked through my journals. She ended up liking my superhero story. After lots of editing and communicating with illustrator Ayan Saha, we had finally published the book. And the rest is all history.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think the road was pretty clear. Birds tweeting, music blasting from the car windows, the trip was amazing! It takes a lot of imagination to write a story, but I think I did a pretty good job with it. There were edits Miss Stephanie suggested, which some I accepted and some I declined. I also made some edits whenever I found something that looked wrong or didn’t make sense. Making descriptions for each illustration was probably the most difficult. Ayan did not read what I had already written, so I had to basically make character descriptions. I talked about the characters and then the settings. It had to be as detailed as possible plus numbering them and putting them in order. Though it was hard, I had the best time of my life writing these books! The road trip was smooth sailing.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I write stories of course and I do competitive dance. We travel all around the world for competitions. I also love playing on my Nintendo Switch. I was most proud of myself when I took a Scholastic Reading Inventory test at school for Lexile levels. Our teacher announced that I got the highest score! I was so happy and proud of myself. I was proud of all my classmates too, their scores were very close to mine. I am known as being very competitive. My mom is the best at playing games. I come right after her on the scoreboard, though. Not that many people can do a lot with their hair. Lots of people don’t even have long hair. I do. I have done so many styles like braid and twist-outs, ponytails and pigtails, straightened and curled. And my hair goes almost all the way to my back.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I think my creativity. I could have never gotten this far without it. This is what makes me outside the box and most different from others. I have a crazy imagination. I can’t really think of anybody else who would imagine a girl eating magical pizza and fighting a villain named Small Head! That idea was all me. There is nothing better than creativity in my opinion. It makes me special.
