Conversations with Victoria White

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria White. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Victoria White

BIPOC Story: BIPOC Streamer Awards was developed in February 2022 when founder, Victoria White, recognized there was a need to highlight streamers who were often overlooked. After watching other award shows that did not celebrate the talented BIPOC streamers in the space, the BIPOC Streamer Awards was born.

The tagline of, “Go Where You are Celebrated, not Tolerated” was perfect for this new award show. This line has always rung true for people of color, and it was time for a streamer award show to be developed to uplift streamers and give them their flowers now.

Fangirl Story: Victoria White is the owner of Fangirl Review LLC. The place for all things geek. She enjoys sharing her knowledge of fiber arts and gaming and is always happy to help others. Ms. White has a Master of Arts in Behavioral Science and works in the Mental Health field as well as teaches Psychology at a local college.

Ms. White started Fangirl Review in 2013 and continues to work hard to grow her brand and work with others in the field of entertainment and gaming. Fangirl Review has received press credentials from Baltimore Comic Con, New York Comic Con, and Anime Next. Ms. White’s goal is to bring content that makes people smile.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road so far has been smooth but it is a road that is off the beaten path. One of the main struggles that we are facing for the BIPOC Streamer Awards is that there is not enough recognition. While we have the numbers and support of the community; we are often overlooked when it comes to sponsors and media coverage.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I currently work in the social services field ensuring the health and safety of individuals diagnosed with developmental disabilities. I have been in the field for over twenty years and although I no longer am doing direct support care and work for the state I try to stay as connected with the population as possible.

I also am an Adjunct Psychology Professor. I have been teaching for fifteen years and have always had a passion for psychology. I am proud of how far I have come in my profession and as a supervisor, I am looked at as a leader for many colleagues. In terms of being a professor, I think what sets me apart is that I am also still working in the field and able to provide real-world examples of the information I am teaching.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I believe the most important part of networking is to remain true to who you are but flexible in your ideas. It is important to learn from others and to take constructive criticism. I have learned so much about myself while reading the feedback from the BIPOC Streamer Awards. It hurts to hear but I was able to put those ideas into the 2024 Award show and I look forward to learning and growing more.
