Conversations with Y$N

Today we’d like to introduce you to Y$N.

Hi Y$N, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started as a DJ at the skating rink when I was 16 and made music in my spare time. Started college at The University of Tennessee in 2016 and got involved with the campus radio station, WUTK 90.3 The Rock. I came in as a student volunteer for a grade in my journalism class and eventually turned it into a career.

I became co-host for The Edutainment Hip Hop Show and began interviewing underground artists and breaking their records. Eventually launched my own podcast, YSN Radio, as an extension of what I do on the radio and have been building that up since 2020.

Present day, I’m a full-time radio personality, podcaster, DJ, emcee, etc. I’m pretty much a jack of all trades at this point. While I am blessed to get this far at 24 years old, I still have quite a long way to go before I get to where I want to be.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It most certainly has not been a smooth road. Quite the opposite actually. I’ve run into so many struggles and setbacks on my journey whether it be janky promoters, wrong place wrong time situations, scams, and so much more. I still have struggles to this day, however it’s a part of the game. It’s all about how you react to things when times get hard that’ll really determine how far you’ll go.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a full-time radio personality, DJ, and podcaster.

I’m the host/producer of YSN Radio, which is a podcast centered around Hip Hop music and culture. I launched it in 2020 and am currently producing the 4th season slated to premiere later this year.

On the radio, I’m a co-host of The Edutainment Hip Hop Show on WUTK 90.3 The Rock on Saturday nights. I’ve been a part of the show since 2017 and we break new records, interview artists, and host live events in the city.

I’m also a DJ/emcee and have traveled all around the south for different events. I’ve done shows with big names like Tay Keith, Duke Deuce, DJ Chose, Tay Money, and Travis Porter to name a few.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Digital media is taking over. The way people consume content, albeit music, movies, news, etc. it’s all online now. Streaming is not going anywhere anytime soon, so it’s best that everyone adapts with the times. That’s why you see more people starting podcasts, Youtube channels, Twitch streams, and other things like that because people spend more time on those platforms than they do watching traditional TV or listening to the radio.
