Conversations with Yu Han Peng

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yu Han Peng.

Hi Yu Han, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Since I was young, I fell in love with drawing, and especially when I saw that my grandfather loved each one of the artworks that I created. So then I decided to pursue the art career when I was older, and even went to SCAD for what I love. I finished a BFA in illustration and was confused of what I really wanted to do because I lost the feeling for the idea of drawing throughout the entire four years in the learning process for business of creating art. And the idea of will this make enough for my livings?

But growing up in a family of foodies, food and finding new tastes has being one of our family hobbies. We love making Taiwanese street foods when we are at home and go to a new restaurant when one of us is having a birthday. Eventually, during the years of COVID, my family decided that we would open our own restaurant in Frisco, Texas. And our second restaurant is opening soon, the next year in 2023. And what’s my part in the restaurant is what I loved to do, designing the logos, menus, interiors, and all kinds of branding and social media.

And because of the opening of the restaurants, I think I found what I loved to do again. I love promoting everything about art, this can be the plating of the foods and interior designs. I fell in love with drawing and painting again. With my recent project, I am working on is the new paintings and decors that would be put on our restaurant wall when it opens. Throughout the process of creating, I actually enjoyed the process again of creating an artwork from the start.

I love to get creative in everything I experience and record all memories that I experienced, and it is why I started multiple social media to promote what I love. Over The Clouds X Eatz is one of the channels where I promote foods and great restaurants that I also experimented with my food photography skills, and hopefully it will get better to be able to support our own restaurant to create better content.

Other than the restaurants, I decided to start an online clothing store in October 2022 called Monofia. Trying to experiment my own small business step by step and learn the process of marketing to promote the brand.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Language and cultural barriers was one of the hardest things that I encounter and often cause some miscommunications. And aside from the language and culture, I think self-confidence is what I am lacking and often questioning and doubting myself of what I do and think will I be able to make a living with what I love to do.

With the clothing brand Monofia, I think I struggled with skills that I think is the most important skill for fashion brands. And that is photography. This will be a new thing that I will have to challenge myself to learn in a short time or just excellent photoshop skills.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Now I design the logo, branding, website, menus, social media posts and even our new restaurant interiors and it will be coming soon in early 2023. I am very excited to be able to show everyone part of my work and what our team come up together for the menus, which is creativity. This restaurant coming up hopefully is what I am most proud of in my design career so far.

Aside from the restaurant, I specialize in creating graphic design works in general. I have my own website for my artwork (hasn’t update in a while), and on the side I do a youtube channel that I post vlogs.

What sets me from others is my creativity and positivity. I was always the happy one in the crowd, and always thinks different and outside of the box and see it from a different point of view. I get inspired for my artwork very easily from anything and anywhere at any time. Always inspired and always trying new things every day.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I think what makes me happy is when I see people like what I created, like a painting, drawing, or anything that I designed. Especially when I see it in public such things like the restaurant logos and menus. The reason why I think this makes me happy because I want people to feel happy when they see my artwork.

Other than the artwork, trying out new experiences and learning new skills makes me happy because to be able to do something more than just in my comfort zone makes me feel that I achieved a new goal.
