Conversations with Yueying Liu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yueying Liu

Hi Yueying, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
From a young age, art was my primary form of expression, beginning with drawings in draft papers and textbooks. In high school, I discovered a deeper appreciation for art through the works of masters like Lucian Freud, which inspired me to refine my skills under professional guidance. At university, I chose to major in Chinese painting, captivated by its rich history and expressive simplicity. This foundation led me to further my studies in the U.S. at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), where I pursued MFA and MA degrees in Painting and Illustration. This dual focus allowed me to explore the complexities of human form and identity in painting while embracing digital tools to create illustrations that blend fantasy and reality.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I was learning Chinese art, it was not easy for me, because Chinese painting emphasizes capturing the spirit or essence of the subject rather than just its physical appearance. And the historical and cultural context of Chinese painting also adds layers of complexity. After I came to SCAD, comparing the Western Painting and Chinese Painting, the technique and context are totally different. While the tools and techniques of Western painting may be more familiar and accessible, achieving mastery and understanding the deeper conceptual and historical elements can be quite challenging.
However, I kind of like to challenge new things, and now, I am starting to do more challenging stuff, such as combining animation and traditional painting.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an Artist and Illustrator dedicated to exploring the intricacies of identity and gender through diverse art techniques. My practice spans both traditional and contemporary mediums, leveraging a rich palette of 2D and 3D methods. Influenced by my background in animation, I seamlessly integrate these techniques to expand the possibilities of my artistic expression. My work reflects a profound engagement with the human form, employing a range of styles to articulate complex themes. I take pride in my ability to blend classical art forms with modern digital tools, creating pieces that are both visually compelling and conceptually deep. Through each creation, I aim to push the boundaries of conventional art and provide a fresh perspective on identity and personal expression.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I am currently engaged in both gaming and art exhibitions, with a keen interest in the evolving field of immersive art. I believe that there is a growing emphasis on integrating augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies with traditional art forms. This innovative approach holds the potential to redefine artistic experiences, creating dynamic and interactive environments that bridge the gap between classical and contemporary practices.
