Today we’d like to introduce you to Yvonne Pitts.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I got pregnant with my son at 14 years old. During that time, I went through mental struggles. Though feeling and believing that my life was over, it wasn’t. It had actually just begun and I could not quit. I’ve always known that I wanted to help people. To get to this place required a lot of hard work and sacrifice; a focus and determination to not quit as I had someone watching me. I chose the mental health field and became an LPC. It is my calling to help and equip people with the tools and knowledge necessary to be free in their minds. To walk from that place of freedom in their everyday lives. To truly know who they are, and that no experience defines that. It is my passion to bring awareness in mental health through teaching, education, and training.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Because of what I was facing, being so young, I was depressed and often felt alone. I believed my life was over-for so long. It was hard to believe that change was coming when all I felt was the pain of the situation. There were tears daily and I did not talk about what I was going through. Fortunately, I had a diary where I was able to write it all out. But God knows our end from the beginning. He used that pain to birth me into where I am today. It has not always been easy. I’ve had to overcome many barriers and setbacks to get to where I am today, but it was worth it all.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an LPC. I am currently employed at Lighthouse for Families where I provide mental health counseling to children, adolescents, and adults. I am trauma-informed. My specialty is Depression, PTSD, and Anxiety. I also contract with Veterans Treatment Court-through Bibb County Superior Court where I provide counseling to veteran participants. I have launched Brighten Morning Star, LLC.- It is to spread awareness through education that will increase knowledge and understanding in mental health. I have a saying: ‘If you heal the root, the branches will be beautiful.’ God had to heal some things in my roots that gave way to unhealthy thoughts, that underlined my actions, what I thought about myself and others. Because of what He’s done for me, I help and inspire others.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I have a few memories that continues to bring me joy to this day:
1. Growing up with my big sister Nikki. When I heard she was coming, everything stopped! I was so excited and there was never a moment I didn’t want to see her. 2. My favorite cousins coming to stay on the weekends. 3. Every weekend my aunt would pick us up to take us to get whatever we wanted. Thinking on memories that bring nothing but pure joy is what I tell others to focus on. It helps not only to shift your attention, but your mood and your whole day.
