Daily Inspiration: Meet Abigail Faulkner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Faulkner.

Hi Abigail, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Abigail Faulkner. I’m a working Illustrator and Designer based in Atlanta, Georgia, where I was born and raised. Originally bound for cybersecurity, my trajectory was changed by my high school art teacher, who encouraged me persistently to pursue the arts. I completed an illustration internship last summer for the Japan-America Society of Georgia, where I designed and illustrated an “about us” booklet for them in preparation for Japanfest. I will finish my Illustration Bachelor of Fine Arts with the Savannah College of Art and Design in May 2025 and will be available for work in June 2025. My goal is to work in the publication or editorial industries, but I also particularly enjoy illustrating greeting cards! I can also sometimes be found at conventions and markets, selling my work locally. My work can be found online at www.ikiwisoba.wixsite.com/illustration.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My road to illustration has not been straight. I actually originally enrolled at the Savannah College of Art and Design as a Game Design and Development major, not as an illustration major. I loved, and still do, love games. However, I changed my mind quickly when I tried to learn to code in C#. Since I had already pivoted away from code-related fields in high school because of previous coding experience, I knew coding and programming wasn’t for me. I changed my major away from Game Design before I even finished that class. It did not come easily to me, and I did not enjoy it very much. At the time, I recently had a professor mention to me that I would be suited for illustration, and that was why I decided illustration was the next best step. Since then, illustration has stuck, and I’ve been working toward becoming a professional illustrator.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I illustrate mostly for publication and editorial fields, but I’ve also been known to dabble in stationery, posters, and motion media. I have some experience in brand management, so I have a strong eye for keeping assets consistent and unified across the board when I create something new for a client. My strength lies in my linework, but my work is also known to be bright, colorful, or dramatic. I also love to hand-letter text: titles, lyrics, quotes, and anything else I can get my hands on.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
If you’re just starting out in any kind of field, I think the best advice I can share is to be persistent. It can be easy to be discouraged when you’re passed over for an opportunity, but sometimes the best course of action is to keep trying. Other people don’t always mean to ignore you- sometimes they just forgot and would appreciate a reminder. I had a lot of really discouraging experiences in my first year of college, but I was persistent and saw it through, and a lot of those old problems I dealt with back then faded away. In hindsight, they’re not nearly as big as they once felt. So, send that follow-up email! Submit your work to a different competition! Attend another event! If it didn’t work the first time, try and try and try again. Learning from your mistakes help a lot, but remembering to be persistent and keep trying is your first step.
