Today we’d like to introduce you to Aisha Thompson.
Hi Aisha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a domestic abuse survivor! For years I was told what I couldn’t do, what I shouldn’t do. What I would never be able to do. Many years after leaving, I finally decided to at least try to do all those things I had dreamed about since I was a little girl. I began to go to auditions and I was actually chosen to be a part of plays. I began to speak out about domestic abuse and its paying effects and it made me realize; even after you leave, there are still many issues that many survivors face. And so the Butterfly house Effect was born. My vision is to have a place that when women/men/children leave; they can truly rebuild. Mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Well, I’m still in this road. It has many challenges but I’m learning so much. I’ve been able to not only do stage plays but movies and stand-up comedy. I’m learning about business funding, grants, etc. It’s tough but I refuse to quit.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Well as of now some people love me for my character Jodi from the stage play Hidden Truths and most recently Detective Sheree Holmes from Trust issues. I love the fact that I’ve been able to play different roles. Comedic relief, gangster, it’s the push of the characters. I give them a voice. A walk. Their attitude. I love pushing myself to new heights.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
If you see yourself doing it; it’s because you should! If you are always thinking about what if I was doing this; it’s because it’s in your heart to do. Learn, ask questions and go for it! You might fall but you get up and go harder.
