Today we’d like to introduce you to Alfred Lamar.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
From a young age, my father told me “You can be anything in the world you want to be, just be your best at it. If you want to be a clown go and be the best damn clown you can be.” Well, I guess I took that and ran with it. I’ve always wanted to do entertainment ever since watching Nickelodeon as a child with my Godbrother saying, “We can do that”. One day during my senior year of high school at A. E. Beach in Savannah, one of the sports trainers told me I should do theater. At first, I didn’t think much of it, but a few months later, I did my first play. I did a history play with the Rebecca Padgett School of Performing Arts. After that first time in the green room and having that experience, I knew this was what I wanted to do. So instead of going to the Army like I originally intended, I went to Armstrong Atlantic State University, now Georgia Southern. I became a Theatre Major and never looked back. I moved to Atlanta in 2011 to pursue my career. However, like with most things life happened and I got distracted from what I wanted to do. Honestly, there were times when I told myself maybe I should leave it alone, but each time I did, something pulled me back towards acting. So in 2019, after being with the Sheriff for five years, I made the decision to go into our reserve unit and really put my all into acting. After a few classes and more life changes here we are, and I wouldn’t change a thing!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been smooth. There were a lot of days I wanted to just give up. And there were a lot of things I had to let go in order to get to this point. But I come from a background of understanding how to lose but not give up. So as many No’s as I’ve received, I’ve always kept in mind all it takes is a yes and it’s not far away.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an actor. I’m classically trained and I love the stage and the energy it gives. I’m very high energy maybe even “over the top” depending on who you ask. But one thing about me, I don’t think I fit into any category per se. I am that guy next door, the love interest, the goofy clumsy one, and dead serious don’t play with him guy. I am whatever I need to be at the moment, and that is what makes me, me.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Wale has a line in his song “Ambition” that I love, “Easy to dream a dream, though it’s harder to live it.” Making this transition into putting myself fully into my craft isn’t easy. As I said, it’s really a lot of sacrifices in one way or another. But what keeps me going is my reason for acting. Yes, the money will come and that’s great. I still stand by what I said when I started in theater. “People have rough lives. So if I can help take your mind off whatever your problems are for an hour and 30 mins or however long then I’m Happy.”
To all my entertainers pursuing their careers, never stop fighting!
